How to Prep for a 30 Day Canoe Trip & How to Come Out Alive

Yeah, I thought about that again after I posted it. My mother owns a Sports Pal. It has been used once, and leaks.

I noticed that too. Why carry it? Just drag the POS.

    Itchy trigger finger...

I don't think that is a Bob's. The ribs in the canoe are standard thickness instead of the thinner 1/4 inch thick ribs in a Bob's. Also the Bob's had regular ribs instead of the 1-1/2 inch wide ribs as seen in this canoe. It also does not look beamy enough. I think it might be a Chum of sorts...

    Indian Girl design question

If the modern composite version is true to the Rushton design I would suspect it might not be much of a tripper. In my opinion, the Indian Girls were more of a pleasure canoe.

    canvas damage and repairs needed

The sandpaper is mostly for the primer and paint. I do go over the filler with 100 grit or so, but filler cures very hard and the sandpaper just scuffs it some. This is why the filled canvas skin is so durable. I like to use a high build primer on the filler and that usually involves a lot of...

    canvas damage and repairs needed

Including shipping of materials and tools maybe $600 or $700. Shipping of heavy stuff is a bear these days. This doesn't include stripping the old varnish and re-doing etc. 7 yds No. 8 Canvas - say $120 Filler - 2 gallons ($150 plus shipping) you will have half a gallon extra. Primer - say 2...

Annual Trip To Umbagog or Time to Relax

Zip Kellogg periodically runs around and shows an antique film of the 1940 American Whitewater Championships that was held on the Rapid River. Obviously, all the boats were wood and canvas...

    Debsconeag Lake, Maine

The carry from White House Landing on Pemadumcook into 3rd Debs is the longest (about 1 mile) but it is along a nice dirt road the whole way. 2nd Deb into 1st Debs is about 0.75 miles, but is more of a chore. Someone filled low spots with ankle wrecking rip rap if I recall correctly.

    Debsconeag Lake, Maine

We have done the Debsconeag loop a few times putting in at Ambajejus Lake at the dam, traveling west up Pemadumcook, carrying into 3rd Debs, 2nd and 1st, and then running down the West Branch back into Ambajejus Lake to finish up. We even did that trip in reverse once going up the Penobscot, but...

    canvas damage and repairs needed

Boreal: Seligas usually command more with respect to resale value. You may find someone here that you could get the canoe to. WCHA Builders and Suppliers: https://www.wcha.org/builders-and-suppliers-directory This is probably not a complete list. A post at the WCHA might find someone...

    canvas damage and repairs needed

I am guessing that is the original canvas on the canoe and it is probably time for a new canvas job. Canvas and filler are easily done. I had some help over the weekend and we canvassed and filled an 18 foot Old Town in less than 4 hours including setting up, coffee break, and mixing the...

Old Town diamond head bolt purpose?

There are some old hardware catalogues on line that show diamond head carriage bolts. I can't seem to find an obvious utilitarian reason for them. I think they are basically decorative. Prior to Old Town using the diamond heads, the carriage bolts were countersunk in the rails likely...

    Deer Flies

I fell for this baseball sized bug zapper in the grocery store aisle. It emits a blue light, supposedly attracts the skeeters, and then zaps them. I have witnessed only one carcass in a month of operation....

    Considering This Canoe

My 2 cents. Like many homebuilt canoes this one is afflicted with, "Big Heavy Slabs of Wood for Decks Syndrome". I realize people like wood grain etc., but decks should be graceful.

Northern Forest Canoe Trail - "Backwards"

The Norumbega Chapter of the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association ran into Peter MacFarlane at Big Island on the West Branch of the Penobscot last week. He is paddling the NFCT East to West. There is more on his trip here: I can't get the second link to work properly, but it takes you to a...

Looking to someday get into canoe building

    give um a good shellacing

I think a gallon would do a lot of canoes. Probably as many coats as you like and stop when you are happy with the finish. I am guessing 3 to 5 coats. It is an acquired taste. Looks a bit muddy. You can easily add more coats later. Just scuff up the finish and add another coat. That is...
