My guess is that it is actually 16 feet long and it is a Pal (pleasure model). The ribs are the narrow 1-1/2 inch ribs. Looks like a good project.

Hi Bob,
I have a 17 foot Chestnut Cruiser that I am currently working on. Unfortunately, I have only paddled it once and that was tandem. I had an 80 pound labrador retriever as ballast. My initial thoughts on performance were, "speedy" and "tender". It may improve with a load. I am really...
Hi Robin!
Those wood and canvas canoes can take a beating, huh? But you knew that!:)
This was 1936 and I am not sure when the Chum was officially offered in the catalogues. It could be the earlier version of the Chum, whatever that was. I noticed heart-shaped decks, tapered keels (not...
Any chance of changing the title on this one? Suddenly I can't view the forum during my coffee break at work. I think the security software picks up on these like this.
Cheers.

Any of you fellas ever been into "Frozen Ocean"? It is north of Poland Pond and west of Allagash Mountain. I have never seen a description on how this particular body of swamp got its name and have often wondered if it is worth a trip in.
Sass makes wonderful paddles. Strong, flexible and relatively lightweight. I have not used it in a canoe. It grows here, but it is at the limit of its range and doesn't get very big.
Good luck with the build.

It has been a long time, but I recall from the books that Loon was a custom made stripper canoe completed to his specifications. There is a skirt in the photo above.
This will give me an excuse to reread the books.

Thanks for the post! I would like to re-visit his films. For some reason, I prefer his books. You may enjoy these too.

Robin: I think it could be the Peterborough/PeterNut equivalent. There seems to be the remnant of an oval decal on the deck. I don't see any dimensions to check in the ad?
Cheers,

The Old Town might be an HW model. If it is an 18 footer with sponsons, they make great sailing canoes, but they are heavy - likely 120 lbs when all restored. They added the hand carry near the deck to help carry these monsters.

You might check with Todd Bradshaw. He wrote the book on Sailing Canoes. He was a professional stripper builder for some time and he did build a fur trade canoe/canot du maitre replica. He hangs out some at the WoodenBoat Forum and WCHA Forum.

I like that site. Somewhere I saw an old photo of a couple having their honeymoon in that spot around the turn of the last century.
One of my fondest memories is screaming down the lake in my 1940 Old Town Guide rigged with sail with my father not too long before he passed away. We had a good...
Depending on when you go through, we could test paddle on the Concord River at the Calf Pasture Landing. It gets busy sometimes on weekends. There are quite a few other landings nearby we could take advantage of. It probably wouldn't take much time to get a test paddle in. I am busy weekdays...
"Meanwhile, it looks like I'm heading back to Lobster Lake and the West Branch in September -- hopefully not going for a swim this time."
If you are blowing through eastern MA on your way North, I have a 1920's vintage EM White Guide (18-1/2 ft) in original condition that you can try out on the...
