Epoxy w/ Graphite Powder on Bottom of Wood Canoe + How a Wood/Dacron Canoe is Made

The old timers used shellac on filled canvas and claimed it slipped off the rocks easier than paint. It is also easily renewed/refreshed. I have shellacked canoes, but haven't used one myself so can't comment beyond that. Fitz

    Copying a hull.....

Yes, DAMHIKT! Made one once with regular teeth and quickly learned the error of my ways! Irregular teeth help in lining up the stick and transferring the points. Cheers, Fitz

    Allagash Lake Loop June 2020

Thanks for the video, dcloots. I watched it last night. Unfortunately, it didn't make up for not getting out yet this year! Maybe in the fall. Thanks again, Fitz

Chestnut Canoe For Sale might be GU

Looks like the 18 ft Ogilvy model with torpedo-ish ends. The Ogilvies were heavy duty and made for salmon fishing in shallow New Brunswick streams. They also used very heavy No. 6 canvas on these boats. Cheers, Fitz

    Epifanes clear varnish not hardening

Epifanes is notoriously slow to cure sometimes. I would give it another week and see if it cures. If not, I would try thinning with the recommended thinner 50% and try again, then 25%, then full strength. Did you wipe the epoxy with anything before varnish? Let us know how you make out. Fitz

Does Ole Woodsman Fly Dope Work

I suspect the August fly that Boreal is referring to is the dreaded ankle biting Stable Fly. They are similar looking to a house fly, but are far worse. They chew the hell out of your ankles while sitting around the fire and draw serious blood. They do the same to livestock, hence the name...

    Two more Chestnuts

Hi Robin, I might need some more pictures. The easiest way to prove a canoe is a Bob's is to look for the thinner ribs. They cut down on the rib thickness to save weight. Fitz

    How long does canvas last?

I would expect it to be in good condition, assuming it was stored well. Can you get photos? If you see any cracks in the paint job, that might be an indication it needs new canvas. Sometimes, even in covered storage, the canoe can go through extremes in temperature and humidity and I think...

    W/C canoe question

Hi Al, word on the street is that they can round out over the years. It might depend on how they were stored, sometimes care may have not been taken during construction and it took on some rounding after being pulled off the form. You might like a round hull a little better anyway, unless you...

    Robin's move

Good luck with the move, Robin. Sounds like a real good deal. Now I have a couple of excuses to visit Appleton - a lumber yard and a chance at a cold one around the burn pile. Best wishes on your new adventure. Fitz

Quality of Cedar for Rebuilding Canoes.

You won't find better rib material that northern white cedar. WRC has been used, but it is brittle. You will break far more WRC ribs when bending. Alaskan yellow cedar is probably a better choice than WRC for ribs. Fitz

Quality of Cedar for Rebuilding Canoes.

I suspect your ribs are not crummy at all. Jerry has been doing this a long time. Flat sawn ribs bend easier, and are structurally better. You might also find rift sawn rib stock. The ribs are northern white cedar. Good clear stock is typically hard to come by. Cheers, Fitz

Canvas cone for sale in CT.

I don't believe it is as old as indicated. The hand carry thwart suggests that it is a Carleton model and the diamond head bolts suggest it was produced after 1920. The floor rack appears to be home made. Good project canoe for that kind of money. Cheers, Fitz

Shop time during the coronavirus lockdown

I have wanted a heavy duty canoe tripping bush knife for some time. I put this one together over the last couple of weekends. Store bought heavy blade, pretty snakewood scales. It will need a sheath now.

Anyone paddle a Chestnut cruiser ( Kruger)

Hi Bob, I suspect you will be fine sitting on the seat and putting the load up front. My biggest concern was the potential for a quick move by the lab that might upset us. I am guessing we had 450 lbs in the 17 footer. The previous owner of my canoe went to Keewaydin as a kid and he bought...
