    Done With It

I think the photo angle makes the ribs look like the narrow ones, plus they are thinner, so it is kind of an optical illusion. Looks like a good boat if someone is looking for a Bob's. Fitz

Robin, I think that might be a Bob's based on the heart shaped decks and apparently thin ribs. Cheers, Fitz

    Wood on Water

The Norumbega Chapter of the WCHA restored a Keewaydin canoe a number of years ago. I am trying to recall the details, but I think it was a 17 ft Cruiser. I am sure the fleet contains a number of different canoes and Dylan may have constructed a form based on the most popular tripper. Come to...

    Wood on Water

What a nice film. I think Keewaydin uses Chestnut Cruiser designs. I could be wrong.

Crossing the Canada-US Border in a Canoe

If it is the river I am thinking about, a call to some northern Maine outfitters might get you an answer. Fitz

    Lobster Lake, Maine

Hi Robin, No, easy ride in for the most part with the 3 HP kicker. We needed to watch for shallow spots though and did break 2 shear pins in the process. It didn't take much to break the pins. Al - I may have exaggerated the "crowding". Campsites on the lake are spread out pretty well, so...

    Lobster Lake, Maine

Well, I finally got out with a couple of friends for some fresh air. The destination was Lobster Lake, west of Katahdin and east of Northeast Carry. Since it was after Labor Day, we expected to have the whole lake to ourselves, but sadly that was not the case. Most of the campsites were...

The $100K Canoe Builder Is Back In The News

Complete with knots and gynormous freaking decks!! Old E.M. White canoes had brass cut waters, but they were much more refined.

    September Allagash Advice

I don't believe Smith Brook is a legal AWW access point. There are falls right at John's Bridge Road that can be carried. I don't know what the brook looks like after that. I can't quite recall if we have ever run Indian Stream, but we have lined/waded it and I do believe there is a carry trail...

    50 Pounder Rebuild

Kinda looks to me like someone sanded it too aggressively in a past refinishing effort. Fitz

    50 Pounder Rebuild

You will want Northern White Cedar for ribs. WRC does not bend well. There is a chance EWC will bend, but NWC is the way to go. Fitz

    50 Pounder Rebuild

Sorry, I was not clear. I meant the original planking on your canoe is Western Red Cedar. I like to replace in kind. Fitz

    50 Pounder Rebuild

Your planking is more than likely Western Red Cedar. There is an occasional Old Town with white cedar to be found, but they were usually kind of special order and it is typically noted on the build record. I find WRC is readily available as decking material at the local lumber yard and it is...

    Exploring the North Maine Woods

Hi Robin, You went to some of our favorite haunts. Island Pond was a popular site for us because the beach was shallow when the kids were small. We ran Mooseleuk Stream into the Aroostook River once upon a time too. Thanks for posting. Fitz

    Big Y stern....

My tripping bud has a 20 foot Chestnut Y-stern that we restored. It motors really well. He only uses a 3 HP kicker motor on it and it goes great. It has carried day trip gear, nine people and two dogs comfortably. We are likely taking it on a trip in a few weeks. I will report back.

Article: Wood-canvas canoes are tougher than you think

I find the work rather enjoyable. Nothing like ending up with a better than new canoe when you are finished. Even ones a hundred years old or more. I own a dozen or so canoes. Wood canvas and only one plastic canoe that I have never even bothered to use or fix. No need for it really.

Help removing dried pine sap from Royalex?

I used lacquer thinner on a heavily coated Royalex hull and it worked great. Try a small out of the way spot first. Fitz
