Tom MacKenzie Biographical Video: Master Wooden Boat Builder, WCHA and Freestyle Founder

They showed the video at the Assembly and I think that was the world premier, so I don't think it was available prior to Assembly.

    Lower Jo-Mary Stream Passage

Sorry for the confusion. No, we stood on the bridge for a while evaluating the options and chose to bushwack. I don't think you could walk or line a canoe down either. Goonstroke has a photo of the chute in his trip report here...

Rub rails on a wood-canvas canoe

I have never done a canoe with them so I am not sure what type of wood was used - on Old Towns for example. I think they were mostly decorative, and look good with two tone paint jobs, but might save some wear and tear against a dock or something.

    Lower Jo-Mary Stream Passage

We spent a long time looking at that stretch to consider if it was runnable or not. We decided that it was not runnable and bushwacked to Pemadumcook. This involved spring water levels. There is a substantial drop there and many boulders. We were in wood and canvas canoes. Your mileage may...

    Maine somewhere.

Have fun fellas. The last time I tried to get into Jo Mary we were windbound and stormbound for a few days. Never did get in there. Hunkered down on a nice island site in Pemadumcook. Look for a very elaborate granite fireplace. Needed to do something with all of our free time.

    17' Chestnut Prospector

Most Prospectors did not have a keel. That is part of what makes them appealing. Any keels would have been special order. Chestnut used standard "thin" keels and wide "shoe" keels.

Simple bannock and other reflector oven ideas

There are some "just add water" cake mixes that we use to make dessert cakes. Blueberry and Mixed berry varieties. They work well if you have a bread pan.

    What went wrong?

My point is that they melt easily and can leave a gooey mess.

    What went wrong?

That happens pretty much every time I use epoxy. It is the nature of the beast. Plastic cups are not the way to go, unless you use the batch very quickly.

    Steaming in a Bag

If anyone is a disbeliever or wants to know more about steaming in bags, the shipbuilders at Acorn to Arabella are doing a lot of it as they make progress on their sailing vessel. https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella/

First stripper build: Prospector-16 Help & comments appreciated

Use the plastic bag method to steam. It allows you to bend bag and all without removing the steam. You can clamp the piece bag and all to the form or to the canoe depending on what you are bending. You can also try the bend several times during steaming to see if it will "go". The only time...

The upside-down method of stretching and tacking canvas

I like the upside down method. I canvas outside, so I don't have any supports to push the canoe into the envelope. I also use tall sawhorses which save on the back some. I have done it both ways and both methods seem to work just fine. Gil Cramer out in Ohio doesn't use all the stretching...

    Another Chestnut(?)

I am afraid I am no Pre-Fire expert. In fact, I bet I have never seen one, but some I have seen were close to that age. Yours looks like a good candidate. I have never understood the cant rib spacing that seems to be diagnostic to some. What do yours look like? Any trout in those ponds of...

First WC and first restoration attempt

Oh boy! Watch out! Wooden Canoe Bug is a fatal affliction. Before you know it, you have a barn full and a kink in the neck from driving by and checking out people's backyards. There is no known cure...

    J R Robertson 16’3”x 34” wood canvas canoe

Your mileage may vary, but I find that Minwax Colonial Maple comes pretty close. I like to seal the whole interior with a couple of coats of shellac after staining new wood and before varnish which helps blend new wood and old too.

    Wood canvas canoe gathering?

I would like to attend if I can make it work. I am planning on the WCHA Assembly too. It might be nice to do a fall leaf peeping excursion.

Questions about sassafras for a paddle

I have a Shaw & Tenney sass ottertail. It has wonderful flex and is my favorite paddle. I will see if I can get a photo of it to post.

New Christmas tree ornament: a Chestnut Chum + its restoration

The thwart is likely original, even if it is short. Sometimes they weren't all that particular about the length of the thwart they were throwing in canoes at the factory. You could probably splice some ends on it to make it longer if you like the shape of the thwart. Nice find.
