Milling planking for a W/C canoe

I use the table saw method. I haven't experimented enough with resawing on the bandsaw though. I have a Rigid thickness planer and have no problem getting western red cedar and northern white cedar to 5/32's.

    Building A Steambox Advice

Plastic bag method. You will wonder why you didn't try it way before now! This one is Honduran mahogany at 35F outside. The PVC pipe is my gunwale soaker. The bag material is 4 mil polyethylene. It is a tube that comes in a roll that is made for custom polybag packaging. Available at...

    16' Old Town Guide

Nice find Robin. It is a shame about the "halos" in it. I recently found a really nice EM White with a slight case of halos. Turns out it was used in brackish water, so the damage was not as extreme. The dreaded tack "halos" are from dezincification of the brass tacks. I haven't found...

    Help IDing a canoe

The seats, crude thwarts, carry thwarts, decks, thin rib ends, outwales, and wide planking near the sheer suggest a Quebec builder (there were quite a few with similar styles), maybe Huron as indicated above. They are kind of rough and thrown together but are nice utilitarian paddling canoes.

How to make new Eds canoe seats darker in color

You could try to tint some varnish and apply new coats to the seats. Most folks try Trans Tint dyes. I have had a bit of success doing this, but I would try it on scrap wood etc. before using it on your seats. Fitz

That’s one way to regunwale a canoe

Here is a Stowe Mansfield that I rehabbed. Now I remember, the ring nails secured the outwales!

That’s one way to regunwale a canoe

You can put new gunwales on a Merrimack, but I seem to remember some ring nails that complicated issues during demo. You won't need to steam them either. They go right on. Canoes with a prominent sheer need the steam. We will be doing an Old Town H.W.

    1928 Old Town "HW" 16'

WC on the build record is normally "western cedar". Old Town had trouble finding long lengths of clear northern white cedar for planking, so they shipped in western red cedar for planking. Some of the first old towns did use northern white cedar for planking, and occasionally you come across a...

    1928 Old Town "HW" 16'

I am not sure where you are located (oh, I just saw the post above), but hopefully you can find Northern White Cedar for rib stock. I try and find pieces where the grain comes close to what is in the canoe. You won't know until you strip that gawdawful paint out. Flat sawn makes for good ribs. I...

    1928 Old Town "HW" 16'

Dogbrain: I just took fiberglass and poly resin off a canoe. I found a heat gun to be a great tool for the job. Also gentle use of a hacksaw blade helped to remove the resin between planks. Thurlow and Stelmok's book is a great resource too. That looks like a decent project boat. Good Luck...

Laminated Wood Seat frame failure postmortem and re-engineering

Just for kicks, Old Town probably made over a million seats for their wood and canvas canoes. Every one of them dowelled. I suspect they did not even use glue - I have never seen any residue. Maybe relying on the fit of the dowels, the cane and varnish to keep things tight. Often times the...
