    Lessons Learned

Yesterday evening, I went for a nice 2-hour paddle at a local reservoir. There are power boaters at this reservoir, and wake-boarding is particularly popular. There is a two-mile stretch of open water before a no-wake zone (my destination) starts. The remaining two(+) miles of this body of water...

    Anyone into big canoes?

A nice wood canvas canoe like that is on my wishlist, but something more in the 15' range is what I have in mind there. A 15'er might fit the below 60# criterium again too...:)

    Anyone into big canoes?

Nice boat but 30# (!) over same size Northstar. The Clipper Mackenzie is probably tuff as nails and it has a much larger payload, but it is simply too heavy for my uses, and too much for me to lift on and off the roof of my vehicle.

    George River Solo 2018 (Updated)

WOW. I mean WOW. You are the adventurer that does the sort of canoe trip I have in my head. Only I have not done any of them. Very impressive, and I can't wait to read more about your trip and see photos and videos. Very impressive travel speed as well ;-)

    Anyone into big canoes?

Thank you for your input, Guys. The Spirit 2 I had (but sold because it was too heavy for me) was a1997 tuff-weave cross-rib with a teal gel-coat. Beautiful boat. Wenonah told me, it was made with their old style tuff-weave layup which was mostly fiberglass. My current Spirit II is Kevlar with...

    Anyone into big canoes?

Sweeper, I looked at the Souris River boats before. I like them, but I believe the interior cross ribs will interfere with kneeling, my preferred paddling style. I had an old style tuff weave Spirit II that had ribs like that. I loved the hull design but couldn't ever find a comfortable way to...

    Anyone into big canoes?

We probably take too much stuff on our camping trips and rather than cutting down on the stuff we "need", or hauling more than one canoe, our OCD has struck again, and we decided to look into buying a larger/longer canoe. The longest canoe we have at the moment is a 17' Wenonah Spirit II. We (2...

    Buying Canoe Advice for beginner

Dellos, lighter and stiffer canoes generally perform better, last longer and are easier to handle, on and off the water, than comparably sized thermoformed plastic canoes. I have a Spirit II in Kevlar, and a 65-pound dog. I sure like the roughly 50 pound Spirit II over my previous 75-pound, 16'...

    Non-Traditional Canoes?

Nothing wrong with ingenuity, Roger! :) I applaud you for finding ways to stay active and continue doing what you love. You found mods to fit your location and circumstances. Paddle on and stay away from those critters!

    Non-Traditional Canoes?

Just out of pure curiosity, why did you chose a canoe in the first place?

    Most recent tripping kit subtraction?

I went from adding more stuff every year to exchanging items (light for heavy). Now, as I am getting older and no longer want to put up with, for instance, sleeping on the ground, I find myself exchanging some light items for heavier ones again. Simply because many of the heavy(er) items are...

    Boat buying advice conundrum

Ran into a similar situation when a friend asked me for kayak buying advice. In his case, $ weren't so tight that a bottom dollar CL bargain or a big box store plastic tub was the only option. My first instinct was, of course, to talk him into a canoe...for obvious reasons, I don't have to...

    new Swift Prospector 14 solo

Oh...same here. I'd love to test paddle one and perhaps the 15' Prospector while I am at it. Swift makes sweet boats! Your link works fine.

    Learning the 17' Wenonah Advantage

Yellowcanoe's comment "...Straight keeled boats respond better to edging turns AWAY from the direction of the turn. So don't heel into the turn heel away from it." is absolutely true. and certainly works well for my Wenonah Prism! Two simple ways to edge straight keel canoes I found work very...

    Describe your seasons and climate

Ha ha...pretty good description of the summer heat here. I grew up in Germany where the winters are more along the lines of what I read in previous posts. -30C was (is) not uncommon. During the middle of summer (June through September) we spend a lot of time in the Sierras above 5,000...

    Describe your seasons and climate

102F is about when we switch from sweaters to t-shirts. Luckily we don't have bad, or much of any, humidity...or black flies... What I miss are canoeing opportunities that get me away from people for a few days or maybe even a week.

    Describe your seasons and climate

Didn't know temperatures come with a (-) in front of the number... The local climate here is pretty agreeable. For those who don't mind getting a little wet from rain here and there, canoeing season is 365 days long. California Hurricane Damage.

    NRS Astral Men's Ronny

Anyone here using that PFD? I am looking for a new life jacket because my old one is coming apart. I also never liked the side pocket it had because it would interfere with some paddle strokes whenever I had something in that pocket. The Astral Ronny from NRS seems to have better pocket...
