    Quotes to Trip By

"For me, it takes only a few days of living--in the open--on the land, before I become enveloped by a sense of quiet exhilaration. It is as though the very power of the earth and the wind penetrate to my soul, and I truly never feel so free, so strong, and so alive, as when I am paddling down a...

Thelon River, Northwest Territories & Nunavut (1993)

I hope that second-story window wasn't left open all summer! Your adventures are such an inspiration, especially in the wintertime. I am very eager to read this trip report! You've shared this story many times before, have already returned to the area once and we all know that you now plan to...

    Charging a phone while tripping

Which model do you have and how do you like it? I've been looking at rechargeable headlamps this winter and haven't pulled the trigger yet. Right now my headlamps are the only thing I take that require disposable batteries and I would like to eliminate them completely. I normally carry two...

    Charging a phone while tripping

For reading material, I use Amazon's Kindle app which has the same functionality and name as Amazon's e-reader. I believe the Nook and the Nook app are owned by Barnes & Noble. I also use Amazon's Audible app, which has a huge selection of audio books. I mostly play them over my car's speakers...

    Charging a phone while tripping

I have bought a few cheap powerbanks and have had great luck with them. The last one I purchased was this one (for $34.99 at the time) from Amazon in February of 2018 and it is still going strong which is especially noteworthy as I use it daily for charging the GPS/Camera and other devices. I...

Swiss Army Knife: Blade and Tools Preferences?

I every day carry a stout, single blade folding knife. I have a squat multi-tool that goes in my pack 100% of the time. I used to think those were the only two tools I needed tripping. I like the idea of Swiss Army Knives and had one as a kid but, until now, I've never looked back after...

    Lake Michigan shoreline erosion

They are experiencing erosion in Minnesota along the shore of lake superior as well. During a blizzard last month a 'sea stack' at Tettegouche State Park was toppled by the waves. Interestingly, the stack was the lake-ward leg of a natural arch that fell in 2010. I don't get why people have...

    Solo learner build

Wow that looks really cool. That camo fabric paired with the dark oiled wood is a winner, and for sure a one-of-a-kind! Where did you source that fabric? Zac

Poll: How old were you when you got YOUR OWN first canoe (and what was it)?

Grew up paddling the local river and made one BWCA trip in a plastic 14' Sam's Club special my dad had bought for abusing on said river. When I wanted to go to the BWCA again in my mid 20s (like 7 years ago) I picked up a well-used 1980 fiberglass Wenonah Jensen for $600 off of craigslist...

    Another first timer here!

Wow, you've certainly been busy! Looks great! I like the alternating colors on the football. I know some people who have done projects with that tinted resin and they look great. From what I've seen, the stuff must be plenty durable and strong enough to use on your decks. I'm not sure...

Yes it is working for me now on Chrome as well. Earlier today it was sending me to a "Driver Fixer"

What do you drink on a trip?

Real, black coffee. Cowboy or Pressed. I have never had an acceptable experience with instant coffee. I have yet to try Starbucks Via. After that it's water and bourbon. Occasionally Canadian instead of bourbon. I do normally carry a selection of the crystal-light style flavored packets...

    Hello from Michigan

Welcome to the forum! Your Phoenix isn't by chance a factory second with crooked skid plates, is it? Glad to see yet another member from the Northwoods here. This is an excellent community, with very knowledgeable folks from all over. Zac

    BWCA Arrowhead

I just remembered something. Johnson Falls should be named "Lower Johnson Falls" and "Upper Johnson Falls". The first time I visited the falls I completely missed the upper portion and, judging by the trails, a majority of groups do likewise. If you do visit, I recommend visiting both.

    BWCA Arrowhead

I've only ever put in on East Bearskin to access this area. The northern portage from East Bearskin into Alder was not clear last summer but the southern one was highway-esque. The portage south of Johnson Falls between Canoe and Pine isn't scary other than length. Moon-East Bearskin is likewise...

How Do You Do Your Dishes?

Someone on this site or another, responded to a similar question earlier this year with (paraphrasing here) "You people wash dishes while camping?" One more vote here for the the eat-it-clean then wipe it with PT/TP method. I really like my Morsel sporks for getting every last scrap...

    Pathetic Workmanship

From what I understand, the reason for the pathetic cooking surface on new Lodge cast iron is because the uneven surface has more surface area and somehow takes lodge's factory 'pre-seasoning' better. People don't want to buy rusty cast iron, but that is how it would be if it were packaged and...

    How Much Dough

Says the guy that BOUGHT a brand new composite already this year... It'd be a downer to me too if I was -3k before ice out. I think the secret is to spend smaller amounts of money on a regular basis.
