Help removing dried pine sap from Royalex?

Mad River and Old Town recommend either alcohol or xylene (xylol), although not specific to removing resin or stains.. https://www.madrivercanoe.com/us/sit...tickyhulls.pdf https://www.oldtowncanoe.com/blog/ar...-royalex-canoe I had a white gelcoat canoe stained with pine resin spots and used...

    A Sappy Situation

I still have pine resin on my backpack after I threw it down under a red pine, those aren't called Pinus resinosa for nothing. Still remember the campsite, scenic and sandy, very nice view.. As far as the dog barfing in the tent, maybe the dog doesn't like camping. Or maybe he drinks too much...

    Old Growth Timber

Blackfly, Maybe not Ottawa, but nearby there's still old growth being cut in Algonquin park. Most of the big old white pines were cut over a hundred years ago, but there still are sugar maple, yellow birch and hemlock stands with old trees. Read about it at ancientforest.org ... maps and brief...

Artificial intelligence (AI) may improve photo quality

Hi BB... I'm surprised someone still remembered after all those years, glad that these posts don't disappear into thin air. Unfortunately, the new Rangers are off the list since Ford widened the body so much they will no longer fit through the narrow driveway that I have to use to park in...

Artificial intelligence (AI) may improve photo quality

Just a little heads-up at this time for any thinking about upgrading cameras and phones (eg. Erica's thread on phone cameras)... there may be some new tech to make phone cameras even more capable. Photos might be taken in very low, near-dark light conditions, noise reduction greatly improved...

Epoxy w/ Graphite Powder on Bottom of Wood Canoe + How a Wood/Dacron Canoe is Made

Recped, I haven't seen him post either... sent an email to his hotmail address, it hasn't bounced back yet so maybe still active. He was doing Russian studies in Canada IIRC so maybe he's moved there.

Epoxy w/ Graphite Powder on Bottom of Wood Canoe + How a Wood/Dacron Canoe is Made

The aesthetics with a graphite bottom are not great IMO... here's a photo of Tom Angelaikis' stripper (he used to post at CCR)... So no, a stripper's bottom should look good, in a canoe (and can't resist, in other business ventures where good looks mean serious money-making capability, no...

Nice break from the hot weather

Can't see the pix Gumpus... yes, it's all cool and comfy here as well. Lake Ontario is in the news in weather reports with surface temps warming much faster than normal and ready to break records. Will show yesterday's pix after the rain in a minute.

    Blue Algae

I would not touch Facebook either, not with a pea-soupy green scummy paddle myself... anyway, blue-greens, since, well, ... ahhh... mentioning no names from the White House now.... well, yeah, him, has rolled back the federal Clean Water Protection Act safeguards, maybe the state is the best...

    Resurrecting a Blue Barrel

PS... Mike... I tried some Armor All Protectant on an old piece of rubber just now, it soaks in and seems to soften it. And no smell, so bears won't be attracted? Don't know how those trappers got away with hauling all those smelly furs in The Revenant without attracting bears. Guns, probably...

    Blue Algae

Yeah... blue-greens produce a toxin which can be harmful if the concentrations are high enough... they occur naturally in many lakes and toxin concentrations will often be low, below guideline thresholds, but when nutrient levels, esp phosphorus and maybe nitrogen are high enough, eg. near...

    Cell Phone Cameras???

There are reviews out there stating that phone cameras' picture quality can outperform dedicated point-and-shoots... myself I prefer a more compact waterproof P&S (also using an Olympus waterproof that's been subject to some bashing that the phone might not have survived). The phone just isn't...

    Resurrecting a Blue Barrel

Oh, you naysayers can scoff and point all you want at the... hmmm, I prefer to call it "value buying"... OK fine, you can have your laughs now but you just wait, this, er, "sniffing out good value" will have it's rewards in time, namely, being self-sufficient in hard times when none is available...

    Resurrecting a Blue Barrel

Loggers found a dog mummified inside a tree trapped the same way. Glad you made it out, searchers would prob not think to look inside there. Ripley's Believe It Or Not sort of material.... https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ee-museum.html

    Copying a hull.....

Fuzzy memory... IIRC how to take the lines off a canoe hull create a table of offsets was described with pictures in the first edition of Canoecraft, Ted Moores... published 1983. But not in the second edition. The first is in the library but it's closed because of the COVID mess. Possible to...

    Happy Summer Solstice to all

Well, sugar pines... I have never seen any and this will be a highlight of any trip west for sure. I can't get PaddlingPitt's summer solstice sadness comment out of my mind... for me, it's a time to look forward to cooler weather in late summer and fall and the color change that happens...

    Happy Summer Solstice to all

TY Gumpus... I've noted the location of the setting sun as in previous years, at it's furthest north point. We had 30C hot sunny weather today in Toronto and dry gardens, the thunderstorms mostly passing north. Today did feel sort of special in a way I really couldn't describe., maybe it's the...
