    What are you reading?

Still waiting, about halfway in the long lineup of about 150 in the library system, to read Bush Runner: The Adventures of Pierre-Esprit Radisson by Ottawa author Mark Bourrie. The demand and interest, along with the author's name, may have been created by a CBC Ideas radio program on the...

    Posting Pictures

The old threads are being stored somewhere... searching on "ranger" bring back posts made in 2011. The thread itself is also clickable for anybody wanting to read through it all, so you might be able to find an old thread archived by recalling the topic. And the photos that were posted back...

    Travel Alarm Clock

Reception in the Tecsun has been good enough to justify buying it at that price... pulls in distant stations much better than the older radios that didn't have the DSP chips. There are all kinds of reviews out there on both the Crane Skywave and the Tecsun PL-310ET... The Skywave might have the...

    Travel Alarm Clock

Sweeper, good catch, the Tecsun doesn't have the NOAA weather band... for something with similar features and weather, check out the C Crane Skywave, good review here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4y59CUGkKMI The Skywave doesn't have the clock and alarm displayed out front and the...

    Travel Alarm Clock

Pocket radios have an alarm function, together with weather reports, news, DXing on AM skip at night and shortwave. The new digital signal processing chips improve quality and sensitivity... and make finding new stations automatic with a button click, no time spent searching around. I once...

    Hardwater

Forecasts for Saturday morning (Oct 19) were predicting hard frost, maybe as low as -7C... that's cold enough to damage apples. Minus 3-4 degrees will be OK with the sugar in the apples acting like antifreeze, but that much frost meant harvesting bushel after bushel of apples Friday. But great...

    Photo of the day

Some great weather on the weekend with heavy frost Saturday morning, clear northern air and some transparent blue skies.... poplar and oaks still in good color. Oaks in red sunset light on Bark lake south of Algonquin Park, cruising the shoreline... and nobody else there. Nobody else crazy...

How does a hogged canoe handle?

IIRC John Winters did some tests and found hogging had no effect on drag or maybe very little... I'm sort of doubting this or maybe too much time has gone by, since I have an old flat-bottomed fiberglass that is hogged and is the absolute pits to paddle at speed with two heavy guys fore and aft...

    Photo of the day

An eastern moonrise to complement the western sunsets... Lake Ontario at the Toronto waterfront. Lake levels were at all-time highs this year.

    Thanksgiving

Thanks, BB... we had a roast this year instead of the turkey which became too much of a production in the past. Weather in southern Ontario was great, sunny, breezy and a pleasure to be outside in. Manitobans OTOH, weren't so lucky where an early snowstorm brought down a lot of leafy trees and...

    10 pound challenge

YW Jim, glad to see it might be useful info.. Lightjay used to post in the old days at MYCCR when it was more of a frontier saloon type of place. Myself, only built one stripper, a tandem Huron Cruiser, and 53 pounds was the lightest I could build in while still trying for some durability...

    Furniture build- Need help

Just a thought which might be totally useless... rectangular-shaped frames might be wobbly unless heavily built (heavy being not a good during long carries). Triangular frames OTOH should in theory be more rigid since that's what triangles are used for in engineering, to increase structural...

Image stabilization causing blur while panning?

Marten, I've enjoyed your vids with the grey jays feeding from the hand several times in the past. Thanks for the info on the stabilization... something to look for in the next camera. Here's a blown-up portion of a photo showing with image stabilization turned off, the background is blurred a...

Image stabilization causing blur while panning?

Two years later and still experimenting with technique... I got a chance to fool around again at the Toronto air show... while panning... does image stabilization blur a panned moving subject when there is background detail? So, yes, it does... more or less confirmed again with fast-moving...

Report - Group Daytrip (Toronto Islands)

What, no photos from the nude beach? Jest kidding, been there, seen that, and that's more detail from the Islands than anybody would want to experience. Thanks for the pix and description. Tommy Thompson Park to the east also has some good wildlife (not the nude variety) although the landform...

    Alternatives to Cedar?

Other species that have been used are basswood and yellow pine. The main problem for me would be the extra sanding time which was too long with eastern white cedar, soft and easily sanded... esp the interior. A harder wood would have caused brain damage most likely. PS... last time I checked...

How to handle the physical and psychological issues of aging?

Glenn, I haven't been posting much myself since I haven't been able to canoe for several years now. Getting older than dirt but still hope to be able to get back onto the water at some point so trying to keep in shape for that. WRT to overcoming the physical and psychological problems, staying...
