    Christmas gifts

I’ve always been told, if you give a knife as a gift you should include a coin with it. That way the person receiving the knife can then “pay” you for it. My understanding is giving a knife without accepting payment will “sever” the friendship or goodwill between the giver and receiver.

    A Raven for Christmas

Awesome build Roybrew! That’s the happiest cat I’ve ever seen. What’s with all the horse figurines?

Recommendations for River Touring Canoe Courses?

Thanks Mark Z! I checked out their website and it looks to be all kayak courses. I may reach out and see if they still offer a canoe course.

Recommendations for River Touring Canoe Courses?

Thanks for the info pblanc. I think we are going to go for it. Is this event something a novice would be capable of participating in?

    Litter, garbage and trash

I did a quick trip in French River Provincial Park this past summer. Every campsite I stopped at on the river sections above the rapids had cigarette butts in the firepit. The campsite I used on the first night had piles of trash in multiple locations outside of the fire pit that someone had...

Recommendations for River Touring Canoe Courses?

All, My wife and I are looking for a good river touring canoe course to introduce us to whitewater skills and prepare us for a river trip in the future. We are comfortable paddling flatwater, but my wife isn't as adventurous as I am when it comes to trying new, potentially dangerous, things...

    2023 Fund Drive Now On

I did some quick research and it does not seem possible to change the payment designation after payment has been sent. You could refund the money back to me, and I can resend the original donation with the proper designation, but I think a small portion of fees would be forfeit.

    2023 Fund Drive Now On

I may have sent a second, smaller donation, as an apology for completely ignoring these instructions in your original post… 😅

Steel River loop- Cheating the Devil

Great trip report Gamma, I’m enjoying your writing style. What’s turned you off on pike fishing? They are some of my favorite fish to catch. I know they can be a pain when losing lures targeting other fish without a stout leader, but they are worth targeting themselves due to their aggressive...

Poll: How often do your canoe trips include fishing?

If I’m out alone, I almost always have a rod and reel with me. If the wife is with me, I’d say it’s 50/50. If my wife and young girls are with me, it’s never. It’s enough work to keep the canoe from going over with a 3 yr old and twin 2 yr olds in the boat.

    Photo of the day

Some family chaos on Canadice Lake back in August. We brought the Curtis Northstar up to paddle at Hemlock’s demo night.

Dave Curtis Announces Desire to Retire and Sell Hemlock Canoe Business

I was in the shop a few weeks ago while they were laying up a boat, and watched the process start to finish. The two people working directly over the boat were wearing a respirator, and Dave, who was placing the fabric, was not. Dave had the garage door open with a fan blowing across the work...

7 Days - French River to Georgian Bay

See below for a trip I went on last month from the Lower French River down to the Georgian Bay. It's a hybrid canoe camping/outpost fishing trip, though I only filmed the time spent with the canoe. I reviewed campsites along the way and tried to capture the essence of the area. It is a bit heavy...

Best Places to Shop for Canoes Near Pittsburgh, PA?

Here's the link to my trip video from the French River and Georgian Bay. I will post in the video section as well. It's a bit heavy on fishing, I noticed when my wife fell asleep during that part when we watched it together. Haha

Best Places to Shop for Canoes Near Pittsburgh, PA?

All, I had an opportunity pop up a few weeks ago that allowed me to get the Curtis Northstar out on the Lower French River and Georgian Bay. I'd say I did somewhere between 40-50 miles of paddling and had some great fishing. I filmed the trip and am currently editing the footage. I will share...

    Clarion River, Pennsylvania

MichaelMerry, thanks for sharing your trip! Do you think this trip could be completed during the summer? I looked at the Cooksburg gauge and its been around 2.5' to 2.7' this past week. Is there any significant whitewater along this section of river that a novice paddler should be concerned...

Best Places to Shop for Canoes Near Pittsburgh, PA?

We picked it up this past Wednesday on our way up to Saranac Lake for a short vacation. My wife and I have been out on Lower Saranac Lake getting familiar with the canoe. This trip was planned before we decided to purchase it, so we have our boat with us as well. The canoe has been a nice bonus...
