Our Winter of Content in Canada's Western Arctic

Yup...what Pringles said. Folks can opt in or out and read as much or as little as they want. That said, I've been hooked since the first post of your Seal River trip. I'm living vicariously through your words. You have a wonderful style of writing and the "serialization" of your trip reports...

    Old Gear Still Using

Thank you for this thread. I feel much better now. I'm hanging out with the right crowd. I frequent a number of canoeing-camping-outdoor websites and I stare at the discussions over latest need-to-have gear and I wonder what I'm missing... Woods pack, Chestnut canoes and Kettlewell paddles...

    Wanted: Roof Rack

Good Catch! I use a set of loops from MEC ( $7or so) mounted on rad frame under the hood on my car- very slick! The length of canoe on the Soul allows using front and rear hooks.without touching hood.

    Wanted: Roof Rack

If the Optima is like the Soul it will have a tow hook that screws into a socket in the front and rear bumper cover. Same system I have on my BMW. I bought a second tow hook and use them both as front /rear tie downs. Bruce

    Wanted: Roof Rack

Yup better advice, Mike. I did the online thing then went down to Rack Attack to see the options in person. I have Thule on my car, with Malone Canoe kit attached. My car has roof mounts and I remove the whole shebang at the end of the season- stretched out to November 15th this year. Bruce

    Wanted: Roof Rack

Hi, My wife has, I think, the only Kia Soul ever made without roofracks. It has a sunroof and no obvious attachment points for a sunroof but she wanted to put on racks so she could use a soft roof top carrier for a trans-Canada road trip. She ended up with a Yakima set that clamped under the...

    WCPP or Kilarney?

Psst... French River does NOT flow from Lake Nipissing to Lake Superior, but rather from Nipissing to Georgian Bay of Lake Huron. But yup, your historical summary- at least from a northern North American perspective- as pretty accurate. Bruce

    Portable Water Filtration & Purification

MSR Miniworks since 1991. Used extensively in 5 provinces- from Algonquin to Bowron-no complaints! Either solo or tandem I like the fact that you can pump as you paddle( ok solo it requires a break!) straight from the lake. Secret is to keep the filter cleaned on a regular basis. Bruce

Our Winter of Content in Canada's Western Arctic

I'm glued to the screen too, waiting for next episode. And I keep reminding myself that this is a canoeing site- we haven't even got to the canoeing yet. I too have a healthy respect for the climate but especially appreciate your last paragraph. There is no secret to dealing with cold...

    Rideau Canal, Canada

Hello! I have paddled parts of the canal many times in the Ottawa to Merrickville area- and two through paddles Kingston to Ottawa, the last time in August 2013 as part of a large brigade of Voyageur canoes. As the Rideau Canal is operated by Parks Canada, the locks are staffed by fulltime and...

Swift's new Cruiser solo, 16'8", for larger paddlers

Interestingly enough I stopped by the Swift store on Hwy 400 at Waubashene on Sunday while paddling the Coldwater River to the Bay and back. They had a Cruiser out front that I looked over. As noted didn’t look comfortable or a “tripping” boat to me- more a cross between a kayak and a torpedo...

Algonquin Park - The Road Well Travelled (Moccasin to Ralph Bice)

Drew, Can't tell you how much I've enjoyed reading your posts. I especially enjoyed your notes about the beaver dams this summer, but too late. My daughter and i did a 3 day paddle Smoke - Ragged-Porcupine_ Bonnechere-Harness Head- Cache- Smoke loop in early July. Weather was scorching and...

Wooden Canoe Heritage Association Annual Assembly - Peterborough, ON

Hi Dave, Fitz, Murat, Nice to meet you all and many more in Peterborough last week. Highlights for me definitely getting a chance to say Hi to Becky Mason and watch her paddle; then the trip into the Canoe Museum back room. 650 priceless canoes of all shapes and sizes, including 14 Chestnuts...

    Rustoleum Top Side paint

Well I filled and sanded the hull on my Bob's Special last year to extend the life of the canvas. I used Tremclad primer and Tremclad Dark Green as topcoat. It flowed and covered well. And the Dark Green was a close match to the original Chestnut Green. Call me frugal but read the hint in Mike...

    Ice Out Predictions

Snow melting quickly during the day but freezing up again overnight- makes fore a fun run with the dogs in the pre-dawn dark! Lakes in North Central Alberta still ice covered but lots of running water in rivers and streams. There are significant sections of open water along the fast flowing...

    Paddles and planes

Hi, Having just tried to take paddles on as carry on last month I can confirm that Air Canada insists they are checked in as luggage- like skis, golf clubs etc.- and you may pay a fee, depending upon your luggage allowance Bruce.

East slope Canadian Rockies river trip advice?

Hi Larry, The latest version of Marks book is Second Edition that was published 2014, with revisions in 2016. He is working on revisions right now. The book contains a wealth of info for anyone paddling in Alberta, but I wouldn't pay$250 for it! Let me know if you have specific questions; as...

East slope Canadian Rockies river trip advice?

Hi Larry, You have a number of options depending upon what time of year you're thinking and how far you intend to travel in 3-5 days... Some suggestions: the Athabasca River from Jasper to Hinton, or longer to Whitecourt. This starts in Jasper National Park in the Rockies...
