    Dog Pad

Hi, Nothing special at all- just the "car pads" from trunk of my wifes car. As our Greyhound has zero body fat he feels every everything- kind of a prince and the pea situation. That said, we just lay these down behind the centre thwart and he settles right down. ( strange how long it took us...

    Horse Feathers Canoeing Scene

Now there is a segue you don't get everyday: Groucho Marx to canoeing technique to Bob Dylan lyrics to portaging in the afterlife... Very eclectic conversation! Thanks! Bruce

    First canoe camping trip?

My first canoe camping trip was on my honeymoon in 1991, 14 days into Algonquin backcountry. I had been camping with family since a kid and done a lot of camping on water- but always in a motor boat. My canoeing experience was poking around and "gunwale bobbing" at the cottage not tripping. But...

    Chums first cannoe trip into...

Very nice trip report- and good to see you paddling the Chum with a single blade... Chestnuts are made to be used; glad to hear that it got a "workout". I was back in Peterborough Saturday for an event at the Canoe Museum and was sharing stories about Chums vs Bobs Specials with the...

    First Swim

First Swim Good Friday in the Sturgeon River in St. Albert AB and in quite similar conditions, paddlinghal. I had borrowed a 14' kevlar Clipper Prospector solo boat for a run down a section of class 2 ww. So before I went out on that stretch, I figured I should check this rig out. For a start...

Northern Ontario W/C, but who made it?

Dogbrain! I'm laughing at your earlier comment- I didn't note the poster before replying. I didn't put the "Northern Ontario W/C" thread and "Pal" thread together. And in another coincidence- I can solidly confirm that boat is no Richardson. Why? Cause I have one! A longterm project...

Northern Ontario W/C, but who made it?

The planking, seat attachment and utilitarian nature is similar to our Langford from late 1960's. Ours also has a couple of "kinky" ribs. Different decks though. I'm afraid I don't have more -or better pictures- to compare as its on Lake Simcoe and I'm in Northern Alberta right now. Bruce

    New Pal

Nice Canoe Dogbrain! A Red Pal you say... I see you and raise you one! This is the canoe I seem to spend the most time in. It's a terrific tandem as you noted, but great solo paddling from bow seat facing aft. Mine is late 60's vintage with slat seats. Re-canvassed 3 years ago. Bruce

Everyone takes a knife with them, right ?

Nothing special I'm afraid but never paddle or camp without my Swiss Army knife attached to my belt. Used the same one from the late 70's until they upped the security processes at airports- had 2 confiscated in Europe within a couple of years of each other. And never camp without an Oxhead...

Jumping into the forum feet first

OK! I'll bite. That's definitely not any part of Michigan I've ever seen. Wonderful scenic shots that reminds me of the Bowron. Keep em coming- and get out there and paddle! Bruce

Opinions on one man, small shop paddle makers

I agree with Recped. We have a number of economy Redtails in the canoe club. Utilitarian, nothing special. My go-to is the cherry Kettlewell Ottertail- now made by Fishell. Another choice would be Badger. Have fun deciding! Bruce

    Greetings from Florida!

Big oops! Must admit to not looking at the photos closely beyond the seat lacing but did wonder about those big wide ribs... My bad! Thanks for steering him straight YC and Doug. Bruce

    Greetings from Florida!

Hi Ryan, Welcome aboard! You'll get some very good advice from a number of folks on this website as there are a number of us here who paddle/restore/repair wooden canvas covered canoes. That sais. a dedicated site to all things wood canvas is the Wooden Canvas Heritage Association - WCHA. The...

    Spring has Sprung!

First paddle of the season in Northern Alberta! Still too much ice on most lakes and the North Saskatchewan River, but the Sturgeon River through St Albert was mostly ice free- keep an eye out for ice floes on the upstream paddle. Not much waterfowl yet- a few mallards and Canada Geese- but...

    South Nahanni River, Northwest Territories

Thanks again. Another terrific story! As others have already noted, your story telling ability combined with masterful pacing and exquisite photography is a real thrill to follow. And I have definitely paddled with "John" or his brother. While it may not ruin a great canoe trip, paddling with a...

    Thought about all of you...

Sweeper, I would put Woolwich Arms above Shakespeare- better food, more taps. Next time. And as Odyssey noted, there is paddling in the area. I'd give the Speed a miss, but Grand is much "grander". Lots of options for day paddles in the Guelph/K/W area. ( And if you get a chance to visit U of...

    South Nahanni River, Northwest Territories

Yes there were showers and info centre at Blackstone when we visited. The showers were great find for the 3 teenagers!!! First shower in 3 days- apparently "dipping" in the Mackenzie doesn't count. The visitor centre however was closed when we got there- and we left in the pouring rain before it...

    South Nahanni River, Northwest Territories

Great start and I'm really looking forward to this one. We overnighted at Blackstone on a camping trip home from Yellowknife back in 2010. Looked like a nice campsite but pouring rain and grey. I had hoped to be able to see Nahanni but everything was just socked in and gloomy. Couldn't see much...

The spare paddle, what do you take?

Solo or tandem, go to paddles are cherry Kettlewell Ottertails. Spare is a Grey Owl bent shaft wooden paddle- often switched for in shallower rivers and lakes . Bruce
