    Chestnut Chum in Mass.

Great looking canoes! Well done. I keep hearing that Chum is such a great canoe- what gives it that cachet? Better than the Bobs Special? I really like my 16' Pal but my 15' Bobs Special is that much lighter and more manoeuvrable. Are the Chum and Bobs that different to paddle? I'd love to do...

    What PFD do you use?

Good old Canadian made Salus Solo! Comfortable, light and roomy. Upgrade might be to a Salus Ungava with bigger pockets- can never have enough room for paddling snacks on a day long paddle! Bruce

    Water, water everywhere ...

Dumb question- can you use a gravity filter in canoe while paddling or is it just when camped? They do seem like they way to go for base camp but on a long lake we'll pump to fill water bottles as we go. Bruce

    Water, water everywhere ...

Two votes for MSR Miniworks filter pump- use it in canoe while paddling and at the campsite. Our original was also 1991 vintage- wedding gift- but alas now sits on bottom of Isaac Lake in the Bowrons... And agreed- regular cleaning of ceramic filter is a must but is dead simple. Bruce

    Portaging questions

Very Interesting discussion. We haven't done anything but double portage on canoe trips in the last dozen years or so- somehow 2 lighter trips seems to beat 1 HEAVIER trip every time now. That said, I've always taken the canoe first, mostly i guess to allow others to come ashore at the portage...

    Creating a wanigan...........

Sven- love the look of yours. That is kind of what we were going for. Fibreglassed, eh? Was hoping that Shellac and varnish would be enough to seal it. How are you attaching the lid? I'm looking for ideas... Bruce And Murat- your Blog was one of the reasons we figured we could build our own...

    Creating a wanigan...........

No Title Late to the party...as usual... This is an idea we crafted this winter using some leftover cedar strips and using steam bending to replicate the tumblehome of my Chestnut Pal. We roughed the dimensions from the inside of my canoe. Its still a work in progress- haven't figured out how...

    Breakfast ideas

Good call! Love Kicking Horse coffee but didn't realize you could get it in Ontario, too. Kick arse and Half- arse (at work) are how i get get through each morning. And the beans are also available as ground coffee for canoe trips. We use individual French Press mugs... Bruce

Sweeper, I wasn't aware of the Forest Store-That's very cool! Thanks for the link. Bruce

    Wooden paddle for Canoe tripping

Can't help you with the Fishell- looked at that site when I was looking for a couple more Kettlewells last year. My go to paddle is my Kettlewell Ottertail for over 25 years now, a matching custom decorated pair were given as wedding gifts. My second paddle is a bent shaft that is especially...

    Chestnut Pal

Robin- what paint did you use for your Pal? I need to repaint my wife's green Bobs Special but she doesn't want it too light... I have a can of Rustoleum Tremclad Green that I like but she's worried it might be too light. Help! Bruce

    Chestnut Pal

Very nice canoe...and looks somewhat familiar. Mine needed 4 ribs, 4 planks, new outwales, new canvas AND a coat of paint! Bruce

    Wood canvas canoe

Get it, Mihun- its great! Only two complaints, Mike- if you're listening... 1. The binding- ring backed would be easier to keep open in the shop, and 2. I miss the colour photos. Terrific source of practical and useful "how to" information, as well as dispelling a number of myths regarding...

    Expedition September 2017

Salut Tom! WowI Details please... "New Prospector 16" in wood/canvas...what make? And the Loire- excellent choice. I know the area Orleans to Nantes fairly well- especially fond of Chinon and Saumur. Some of the best wine country in the world and lots of history. Cool trip. Very envious. Bruce

i cant wait for driverless cars!!

I tend to think that those anxiously waiting for driverless technology shouldn't be driving NOW! ( not that that applies to you Meopilite...) And yes, put me firmly in the Luddite category: standard Transmission in all cars and cedar/canvas canoes. Taught all 3 kids to drive standard, too...

    Cedar strip wannigan

Mihun- love the "cool" graphics and name! I too am stumped on how to close and secure the top. And also how to lift it in and out of canoe- it doesn't yet have handles. I was thinking rope but that may involve putting holes in the sides- ideas? As this thing has developed it has turned out more...

    Cedar strip wannigan

No Title Sven- That looks great. I did something similar a couple of weeks ago but it sure doesn't look as fancy as yours. It isn't finished yet- trying different shellac/varnish combinations to seal it. Had some scraps of cedar and wanted to try steaming "ribs". For first attempt, I'm...
