Solo Paddling the 6th Great Lake: Nipigon

Tell him we'll all chip in for a huge bag of nachos if he cuts a few single blade videos.

    ID this layup!

I have to keep reminding myself not to acquire any more boats that violate the rule of 100 (weight of boat plus your age less than). IASNAWE, but this time I looked in the wenonah file. There is mention of a kevlar Echo with cross rib construction in an old catalog (not sure of the date --...

    ID this layup!

IANAWE, but that looks like tuffweave to me. It has the cross rib stiffening which usually goes with tuffweave or glass. The kevlar boats usually have a diamond shaped foam core, sometimes with side ribs, or less often a center rail. Still a nice boat for someone with a strong back!

Cold handle frying pans, they’re still out there.

Junk stores should be required to post whether they have any cold handle frying pans in stock, preferably with the quantity in foot-high numbers like gas stations. I often go by them and think gee, if there was a 10% chance that place would have a cold handle frying pan amid all the knickknacks...

    Physical Conditioning for Canoe Tripping

I do some calisthenics at home, snowshoeing, pseudopaddling on a hacked rowing machine, shoveling snow out of the driveway, etc. I make an effort to keep the non-paddling season as short as possible -- I usually paddle in December and I always paddle in March (there's one local stream that...

    Canoe Poems and Haikus

A canoeist once said to a mate "A skid plate can be never too great!" Ere his skid plates did grow And his travels did slow Access ponds, in the end, were his fate (limerick is to poem as Coleman is to canoe ...)

    Sawyer Cruiser Mold

My 7th, but it's a favorite, a real sweet hull. I did the MR 340 in it, and it's what my wife and I use for an afternoon picnic paddle. It doesn't feel like a racing boat, but it just lets you know that no effort is wasted, like a good road bike after slogging around on Schwinns with coaster brakes.

    Moosehead advice

For Moosehead Lake, grab this map The state has a lot of shoreland and does a pretty good job of mapping it. You might find a paper copy of that map in kiosks in Greenville or Rockwood. Still, Moosehead is a big lake with boat traffic, and on a windy day it looks like the deep blue sea...

    Essential nonessentials.

I'm still going chairless in my middle age, does that mean I get a double ration of bourbon? My nonessentials mostly relate to food. I probably pack 6000 calories per day, not because I think I'll eat that much but because I want to have some choice. Will it be a peanut, almond or cashew...

Moose River (Me.), August 9-11, 2022

Great trip report. Wow, that's a lot of water! I've done 7 bow trips and never had that much. Usually Attean Falls is scratch-n-sniff. I recommend the Allagash Loop. The longer carries keep most of the riffraff out.

Poll: What is Your Current Preferred Method of Water Filtration/Purification?

That reminds me of the Southern California remark, "I like to see what I breathe." Bah, plan your next one and then write the report. The Trippers Emeritus designations can wait. Re: water, I've used an MSR miniworks and a platypus quickdraw. The latter is lighter and flows well (shake to...

DIY Spray Covers - Sequential Steps & Photos

Thanks guys. @Clint, I hadn't thought about snaps right on the outwale, that would be tidy. @yknpdlr, your Hornbeck setup sure looks slick. I don't know how to sew, so whatever I do it will be adhesive or heat seal fabric. A good winter project.

Show us pictures of your canoe vehicle with boat(s)

Carefully plan those left turns! Nowadays the sheet metal is so thin even if we had fenders they'd oilcan under a kevlar boat.

DIY Spray Covers - Sequential Steps & Photos

Thanks Mr. Guest & contributors for this instructive post. A week before this year's MR340 race I decided I should have some spray deck partials to help with the wind. I didn't have time to order materials and do it right, so my "deck" was probably about as refined as Mike's plastic templates...

    Maine somewhere.

Was it here, by any chance? I checked out this island site before taking a nearby one on a smaller island. This fireplace survived a big blowdown but it could use some clearing, more than I could do with hand tools.

Swift Keewaydin 18.6 vs H2O slingshot

I haven't paddled either one, but I'll venture a guess that the 222 is slightly faster but the Keewaydin would be faster than anybody else on the lake who didn't have a 222, a Jensen 18, an SR Susquehanna, etc. In racing boats you have to care about the last 1% of speed but it's diminishing...

Paddling places that weren't what you expected

I have to admit I'm a bow trip junkie, 7 times so far. It's the perfect impulse trip, just the right length for a weekend (even a one night), a true loop so zero logistics, lovely scenery. Sure there are some people but I've never had a problem finding campsites. Some mud, yes, but it's...

    Meet 'Brie'

I usually go for firmer cheese, but if I had 'Brie' I would use her to portage a solo canoe on my head. Temporary yokes are unnecessary.

    easy first-day dinner

Maybe too easy for the topic, but one time making a late start on the Moose River bow trip we picked up a large pizza from Bishop's store in Jackman, ME. We took care to keep the pizza box dry since we knew we'd need to burn it before the portage the next day. Pizza on a beachy campsite under...

Electrical device you are most likely and least likely to eliminate

I don't wear a watch in civilization since clocks are everywhere, but I do when I'm on the water. I have a pretty good idea of my cruising speed and I make time/distance estimates to be sure I know where I am, e.g., I should pass that duck shaped point around 12:45. If I don't, maybe I'm on the...
