How many paddles do you bring on a canoe trip?

Usually N+1, N number of paddlers. Solo I always bring an extra since I like to have the straight/bent option, even on a day trip.

Do you bring an ice chest or cooler?

On a group trip I was once assigned to manage the gin & tonics, and that time I brought a small cooler with a smaller cooler inside for secure ice. I don't really like gin, but the tonic allegedly protects bug bitten trippers from malaria (n.b., not health advice). Also, fresh lime is...

Pet food containers for flotation and storage

Thanks for reviewing, I've been curious about those for a while. Right now I use a couple of buckets with gamma seal lids, one 6 gal one 3.5, but they're far from perfect. Round objects are annoying in a canoe.

    Marine Salvage Tripper XL

I'm sure there's a way you can wrap an XL Tripper and end up with a couple paddleable Packs.

Jokes and Laughter for the Day

Nice haul, but I'll bet that gurgley skid plate drives him nuts.

Cliff Jacobson: NO to skid plates!

If you do it, write a review after a season or so. My intuition is that a mostly-PVC keel strip would be too soft to survive long term with boats dragged around on rocky rivers, but if it works, it sure looks easy. It might be good for UV protection on a royalex boat that's worn down to the...

    Old Town Penobscot 17

That looks like a 17 (royalex), not a 174 (poly). If so, very nice for the price, even with some bodyart.

Stay safe in this big storm ...

Yup, but at least this time I know my generator is still running well.

Photos of Portage / Canoe Carry Signs

This sign marks a trail around Gilman Falls in Old Town, ME. I don't believe the dam here is doing any generation but it holds back the same impoundment as the Milford Dam, so it's all part of a hydro project and apparently the license requires the company to maintain portage trails. The company...

Check out these beautifully done Algonquin Park maps

Kevin Callan interviews @jeffreym. I've never tripped in "Greater Jeffsmapsland", but those maps look awesome.

    Litter, garbage and trash

Tires do indeed multiply like rabbits. In Missouri there's a nonprofit devoted to cleaning up the big river and educating people about it. They're the ones that put on the MR 340 race. https://riverrelief.org/ Closer to home I once came upon a Ski-Doo in Sunkhaze Stream when I was paddling in...

What Do You Do In Winter ?

Exactly. This is the view to the right from the same spot. For people who haven't been there, it's a nice access point / park, although I ususally put in on Pushaw Stream. Gilman Falls has been somewhat dam raised, although natural rapids remain (w/nasty holes). Portage trail about where I'm...

What Do You Do In Winter ?

If it's too cold/icy for paddling but there's not enough (or any) snow cover for snowshoeing, I sometimes head out on a road bike. I hate winter rain, and cold weather afterwards when the ground is bare is just offensive, but it does clear the pavement. Maybe this post is off topic since this...

Stuff you don't need or hardly ever use, but you bring anyway

A can opener. I never bring any cans tripping, mainly because they make annoying trash, but I wouldn't want to be caught without one so it's permanently in my utensils bag. It's only a little "P51", so leaving it home would save me like 5 grams.

Canoe / bus crash in Bangor, Maine

This "shipwreck" happened here in my neck of the woods and is too picturesque not to note: https://www.bangordailynews.com/2023/10/03/news/bangor/community-connector-truck-crash-canoe/ I didn't see it, but I expect the bus driver will have some explaining to do. A black truck with a red...

    Self Shuttling

Yep, but we also need a robot that can change tires. Those Telos arrowheads are hidden in the dust, even the fancy lidar sensors can't see them.

    C-4 question

I don't know C-4's either, but FWIW I did notice that MountainMan in Old Forge has a couple of Northwind 20's on end-of-season sale. I think that boat is more a C-3.5 and it wouldn't pace a Saranac or a Minn 4, but it might be a nice fast touring canoe.

Recommendations for a new whitewater paddle

I have a Werner Journey with the composite shaft and the green fiberglass blade. I've beat the crap out of it and it hardly seems to notice, it just kind of erodes a mm or two. I usually bring the Journey and a light(er) bent shaft ZRE, so the former gets the abuse even though it's pretty nice...

How do you deal with loud talkers?

The worst thing is bow paddlers who stop paddling in order to talk loudly. The yapping is bad enough, the loss of proportionate thrust is an added insult.
