    Underwear

I have old REI water shorts that I really like - they look like hiking shorts with the usual pockets, are loose fitting and made of nylon. Comfortable and fast drying. My wife has repaired them several times, so I really hope they last for the remainder of my tripping days. Perfect summer trip...

    Canoeing myths busted

When I think about the topic what comes back to me is the times we have had 8 or 9 guys in a 2 queen bed hotel room while the high end canoes are out there on the vehicles which are packed with really nice gear.

The Joy of (Self-Imposed) Canoe Trip Suffering

When I was younger I used to really like challenging trips. Now that I am older, I like trips where we sit around the campfire with our booze and tell stories about those challenging trips.

BWCA Bear Proof Food Storage Rules Change

Like the psychologists say, the 3 greatest motivators for humans are food, sex and money. For bears and other mammals it would be the first 2.

    Underwear

My BIL, a Vietnam marine vet, said they had the same underwear routine in the field, only they substituted weeks for days.

Twig Stoves: Experiences, Opinions and Pictures

Most of these stoves are unknown to me. In years past I was kind of a camping gadget type. I am proud to have finally developed (mostly) the ability to differentiate between my wants and needs.

    2-Man Tent Recommendations

I have a collection of old but still serviceable tents. The last few years most of people I go with on group trips prefer to use their own tents. So I take my inexpensive Eureka 2p which is comfortable for one but would be cramped with 2. And I also use it on my solo trips. Far from the best...

Twig Stoves: Experiences, Opinions and Pictures

This is a very interesting thread - I had no idea there were so many different versions of twig stoves.

    2-Man Tent Recommendations

As SouthernKevlar suggests, I now use 2 person tents when I solo. I tired of a Cannondale solo tent that was too coffin-like for me after years of use. I couldn’t even sit-up in it without my head touching and it had little room inside for gear.

    Wind threshold

Yes it was. Our mistake while driving in was probably failing to listen to the radio. The weather during the last couple of hours while driving in was real funky - periodic torrential downpours, temperatures in the 70’s and periods of absolute calm. Real strange especially for the western Upper...

    Wind threshold

In late April 1984 a buddy and I entered the USFS Sylvania Recreation Area in the UP of Michigan at the north end of Clark Lake, a lake about 2.5 miles long running north/south. It was uncommonly warm that day in the 70’s. The lake had just gone ice free and was covered in a heavy fog. We were...

Hauling Two Canoes When Thule Hates You

I have used 2x4’s which a friend routed out slightly so they fit over my existing 48” bars, then clamp in place. Or use pipe as pointed out in an earlier post. This should be an easy fix.

    Underwear

Scratchypants mention of Under Armour reminded me of a friend I used to paddle with. His son was a University of Wisconsin standout football player who went on to play with the Cleveland Browns for many years. He had an endorsement deal with Under Armour so the entire family was always wearing...

    Underwear

I use synthetic underwear on trips for their quick dry ability. And I don’t like the seemingly high cost so I watch for them from vendors such as Sierra Outpost, etc. I do like merino wool tops which I wear daily about 7-8 months of the year. I am an old guy with declining metabolism.

New purchases that have been great, even game changers

I would agree with Glenn that my best purchase was the Platypus gravity filter system that I got at a 30% discount while working at Canoecopia. A friend actually paid for it and we donated it to the Wabakimi Project for use on their trips. Previously we used MSR Miniworks Filters, which I...
