Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

In anticipation of next summer’s BWCA trip I’m wondering if I should get a double paddle. Reason being is this trip will have me doing more paddling miles than I’ve ever done on a single trip before. At face value just seems like a double paddle would be “twice” as efficient. More speed, less...

    Whistling Away Wolves

I looked into dog whistles as a potential wolf deterrent at one time. Found no actual study or evidence but the consensus seemed that it would peak the animals curiosity and have the opposite of the intended effect. Firearms can serve the same function as a bear banger, but offer a definitive...

    Peeing in one’s canoeing shorts

Don’t think there is one. From what I understand urine contains very little bacteria to the point urine was often considered sterile. Well, as long as the person is healthy. Imagine having a UTI would change that dramatically.

    Peeing in one’s canoeing shorts

I’ll make a note to always pee in the water. I remember peeing in a public pool once. The lifeguard suddenly freaked out on me. Startled me so much that I almost fell in.

    Peeing in one’s canoeing shorts

Thats weird. Maybe take her canoeing just after ice out and see if she adapts to a more civilized method.

    Week of BWCA Wind

Of all the things Mother Nature can throw at me, wind is the element I have yet to make peace with.

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

Could single carry but feel it takes more effort to carry one big load than multiple trips with smaller loads. Reminds me of all the productivity studies done back in the industrial revolution days. One particular study was increasing amount of coal workers could move. The initial thought was...

New canoe speed record for Wisconsin River

Probably all the FCFS campsites were occupied so he kept on pushing forward.

    An Alternative, Alternative Fuel

I always carry at least 2 fuel cans. Possibility of the check valve failing and leaking all the fuel warrants that. I did have my MSR Pocket Rocket deluxe fail me when the grate fell out of the burner. The grate and mesh need to go back together in a very specific way or you get a crappy...

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

Because it’s essentially a campfire, just smaller and built in a packable fire ring.

    Ballast for Wind, Current

This works for me. A 5 gallon bucket full of rocks as far forward as possible. This is a NC Prospector 16, empty, I’m sitting in stern seat paddling backwards. I’m not a small guy at 280lbs so an empty solo canoe is challenging to trim.

Kayak vs Canoe - Your Personal Pros and Cons

I don’t consider myself a paddler. Camping is my thing, followed closely by fishing/hunting. My watercraft is simply a tool that gives access to these activities. I need to haul gear and be flexible for going solo or with a buddy. Therefore I’m solidly a canoe guy.

    Holiday Equipment Deals

Zenbivy got me with their 30% off. Bought one of their air mattress integrated beds a few years ago and it’s great for tent camping. I just use the quilt portion when hammocking, but it’s a 15 degree down in XL. Too bulky and warm for most summer camping. Therefore I bought just a large...

    Holiday Equipment Deals

Bought one but didn’t realize they were all cloth. Hope I will be pleasantly surprised and not have a novelty map printed on a handkerchief. Cloth doesn’t seem the ideal medium for printing something that requires resolution and accurate scale.

Hanging or storing a canoe off floor in a garage with vehicles

Just had an incident with my storage arrangement. I store my Yakima crossbars in my canoe in the off season (no point having them still on the car all winter). A cover that conceals the tension mechanism on one of the bars popped off. Hit the hood of my wifes car and put a hearty scratch...

    Canoecopia 2025

List of exhibitors is already pretty long for being a few months out yet. Luckily I’m local so I plan my attendance based on the presentations schedule. I keep asking the Nova Craft people to bring some merch to sell (hats, shirts, gel coat repair, etc) but they never do. Only other way...

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

In areas affected by a fire ban what is an acceptable method for cooking? Imagine stick stoves are no go but a jetboil ok? Alcohol stoves….yes or no?

    Amok Draumr Hammock

Here’s my last trip. Logged a lot of nights in this hammock now. Many nights too in my backyard. Waiting for a nice cold, snowy night to trial it under those conditions. So far the winterlite air mattress feels warm. That fine mesh screen actual blocks a lot of wind and retains heat. Some...
