PortagePal to carry paddles and fishing rods

Last thing I want us to lug an essentially unneeded unitasker apparatus on a trip. Paddles can serve as walking sticks. Fishing poles secured under seats/thwarts with bungee-dealee-bobs.

Stuff you don't need or hardly ever use, but you bring anyway

In summer I don’t bring a dedicated light source anymore. Not that much darkness anyway and so many other devices have gratuitous flashlights on them if needed…battery bank, weather radio, cell phone, etc.

    Canoecopia 2025

Going on Friday gets you first dibs if looking to buy gear. I know in years past some booths were pretty much cleaned out by Sunday. I don’t know how this is all coordinated between Rutabaga and the exhibitors. I assume most stuff on display is actually Rutabagas inventory…which is why you...

    Canoecopia 2025

Whats all your plans for Canoecopia this year? I’m local so I’d usually buy 2 weekend passes and go everyday. I’d either drag my wife or oldest kid along. Didn’t do that this year. Not particularly interested in any seminars. I’ll probably swing by Friday and buy a single wristband at the...

The effect of tariffs on the paddling industry

At my job we do glass filament winding. We source glass, resign and hardener domestically. There are cheap materials we source from China as a backup but quality is lacking so we try not to.

    Canoecopia 2025

First time? There’s always some seminar along these lines at Canoecopia. I admit the description of this seminar really reeks of elitist white savior mentality.

The effect of tariffs on the paddling industry

I would be interested what prices the canoe market can really bear. Paddling doesn’t necessarily seem like a rich persons game but it certainly can be. Anyone ever see some marketing statistics on paddlesport customers?

    Useful Youtube for Canoe Tripping

What do you like to see from these YouTube channels? If I’m planning a trip to a spot I’ve never been before its awesome to find a video of someone there and use it for scouting/recon. I like the guys that show you maps and talk about their plan. Nature B roll shots are fine but I want to see...

    Training?

Some of those rowing machines exercises look like they could be accomplished with a simple dumbbell row exercise. Endurance/cardio is likely a better attribute than strength. Seems those two can be mutually exclusive. Never seen a marathoner or triathlete that looked like they spent much...

Sharing your location dot with spouse

Bit off topic, but those worried about cell phones tracking you should not read up on what Flock cameras are and can do.

    Canoecopia 2025

The presenter schedule is up on Rutabaga’s website now. This is Cliff Jacobson’s final presentations as it sounds like he’s going to retire.

Sharing your location dot with spouse

Our family uses Life360 on our cell phones. Personally I got no problem with being tracked. If anything I get a little depressed that nobody really cares to track me. I know some people feel thats creepy and such. I honestly don’t understand that feeling. Not like I’m invisible, trying to...

Bow ballast for solo paddling: the more unusual, the better

5 gal bucket full of rocks. The bucket is multifunctional. Its a seat, water for dousing campfires, carry misc loose articles. The bucket just wedges behind the stern seat ensuring ballast weight is as far forward as possible. Rocks are heavier than using water. I’m a big guy so need a...

Weather: Was it colder when you were a kid?

I remember winter being harsher as a kid. But then again all my winter clothing was mismatched hand-me-downs. Had a wood furnace in a drafty old farmhouse. Frost on your bedroom walls in the morning. Got dressed under the blankets and then huddled around the gas oven before running out to...

Isn’t vacuum also for anaerobic cured resins?

What height boots do you prefer?

If the situation necessitates boots, then it likely necessitates a tall boot. Thats my philosophy so I get them as tall as I can. If not wearing muckmasters I’m in crocs or an old pair of running shoes. In summer, no matter the footwear, I’m usually kicking them off and going barefoot in the...

    Judging a person on appearance

Another side of this is how many of us look like the stereotypical wilderness canoe/kayak people? I don’t think I fit the part. May explain why I don’t I have any friends or acquaintances into canoe camping. All the people I associate with outside of work are from a car club.

Musk Changes Everything for Satellite Cell Phone Service

Airplane mode…since my phone is a gps and camera. All this does is threaten to make current sat phones and in-reach/zoleo devices obsolete.

Looking back on 2024 and what’s ahead for 2025

3 trips last year, plan on 3 trips his year again. Planning a week solo in the BWCA this year. Got a loop mapped out and planning to finally do some proper tripping.

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

Guess it doesn’t hurt to have a double in my arsenal. I’d always carry my old trusty single blade anyway. I’ll add this to my agenda for Canoecopia this March. Fairly sure there will be a few experts there that can help me pick one out.
