Thats a lot of little pieces glued together. May I ask why you wouldn't have considered making those out of a solid piece of wood?
I'm a big fan of using traditional joinery where you can (cabinetmaker here). I'm sure that the specification on the epoxy shows it will be fine, but to my way of...
Good info, thanks everyone. I'll check out my local hardware store for the tubing, and I consider whether to rivet or epoxy in some cleats. Thanks again.
I want to make a sliding seat for the bow of my canoe. I've seen the sliders offered by (I think) Wenonah and Clipper.
My canoe is a Souris Quetico 17. I'd like to make a seat similar to what is in the photo attached.
I'm not sure where to get the aluminium tubing, nor am I sure how to...
Thanks for the tips! I used epoxy to glue mine together. I'll provide a photographic update shortly, but it hasn't gone that well for my first paddle :)
I didn't get the book yet because I like to figure things out on my own so I just bought some lumber and went for it. So now it's probably got...
Good on you guys for getting out in Tick season! We had a few last week also. You know, there are plenty small trips around within a few hours drive of Warren that are quite interesting and also have good fishing. Not every trip needs to be a long drawn out affair. Experimental lakes has some...
Thank you Karin - I will take you up on that! Likewise, feel free to visit over a coffee in Winnipeg next time you're in town and we can talk canoeing. My wife and I just came back from the ELA where we had nice warm sunny spring days (water is still a little cold for swimming though).
This is what I do. I have a cap with rain gutters on it, but don't like the fact the canoe overhangs so far on each end - especially the back. I also like it towards the front so I can look out the windshield and have a visual indicator of what is happening up there. So I got a set of towers for...
I just hope all that hardwood doesn't make it too heavy!
Next, I'll rough shape it with my power planer. I'm not as sophisticated as you folks with nice big hand planes :D

Here's my first attempt so far. It's not shaped yet. Cherry, Walnut and Maple. I used a poplar core for the shaft to keep the weight down. I just laminated some Cherry to it to make it look better.
First time uploading photos so I hope this works out ok :)
Does anyone have a diagram of how that bridle should be tied?
I've used them and agree the lining performance is far superior, however I've never tied one myself. It seems simple enough, however I'm not sure if it can be done with a single rope.
Rope over the belly tied to each bar. Truckers hitch. I have brackets on my racks to stop the side-to-side movement. If I'm going on a highway for more than 10 minutes I'll add a safety rope tied to the foremost thwart and connected to the front bar as a back up.
