How much safety is too much safety?

Sounds like a very good time to have had a hammer strap on your holster!

How much safety is too much safety?

One thing about personal choice versus mandated rule is that you get to decide on your actions but you accept the responsibility for those actions and how they reflect on the paddling community. I try to choose on my level of safety gear based on the activity and situation of that activity...

    Canoecopia 2025

I am envious of all you folk within a day's drive of Canoecopia. This is an event that I would love to check out some day not only for the new gear and seminars, but I cannot imagine that many canoeists in one place!

    Which Canoe For Summer Solo?

I've not had it long enough to try a river trip but I have been surprised by the Wenonah Argosy in Royalex that I picked up a couple of months ago. It's 14'6"long, 30 1/4" wide and 13 1/2" center depth. It is a good handling canoe that I could see doing a river trip in and I will probably be...

Shoutout your local whitewater boat builder

I have never paddled one, but the design looks like it would make a great paddling C1. I am tempted by a Storm Chaser currently for sale in Asheville NC, but it is a size too small.

PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

All good points. Also add to the list : Check the fit. I lost 30 lbs. about a decade ago and had to throw out one PFD because though it fit before the loss, it would ride up under my armpits and about 4 inches above my shoulders without a belly to belt under it. Changes happen.

PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

The Indus is pricy, but it is on my short list. If it is a good fit I may decide to pay a bit more for the safety factor. Or maybe I'll buy two other PFDs for the same price and wear one over the other, giving me 32 lbs. of buoyancy for the same cost.

PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

I wonder how many canoeists GAIN buoyancy as they age?

Shoutout your local whitewater boat builder

If you are considering C1 decked canoes, add River Elf. They make composite C1s and kayaks.

PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

I was wondering about the bulk and comfort of the Hi-Flotation models. I would definitely be trying it on before buying, even though I might get funny looks from the kayakers while kneeling in the store. I also plan on different PFDs for different conditions. I have my Stohlquist Ebb for...

PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

Thank you all for your information. I think I may have asked the wrong question and should have asked if anyone here had used any of the High-Floatation PFDs in whitewater. Most of the High-Floatation whitewater vests that I have found (Astral Indrus at 22 lbs. Floatation., Stohlquist Canyon at...

PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

After reading and posting on the “Whatever happened to Canoe lifejackets?” thread, I started looking up information on new PFDs. I have always used a regular Class 3 PFD, choosing one that fit my body first and wallet second. I hadn’t looked at PFDs for a while since purchasing one around six or...

Whatever happened to "canoe" life jackets?

My first PFD was a Seda "Full Length" type, as was the fashion among C-boaters in the early 80's. It wore out; we are talking big holes in the fabric. Next was a "Kayak Length" Extrasport; it still had the vertical foam strips. Still have it. Don't use it, but have it. I followed that with a...

    The new Swift Cirrus canoe

Wow, the Swift Cirrus 14.6 and the Northstar Phoenix sure are close on the published specs. The Phoenix looks to have an extra half-an-inch on all the freeboard measurements and additional one-half inch stern rocker as the spec differences. I wonder how different they will look side by side...

How to Get Heavy Ice Out of a Canoe

Congratulations on the problem solving. I was going to suggest a bit of chain and a come-along to move it, then wait for an above freezing day. Royalex is tough stuff.

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

Dewey, Cheatum and Howe was also used in a (maybe multiple) Three Stooges skit. It became a running joke between me and my brother. Thanks for the image. And a big +1 on Car Talk!

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

After the last few posts, the many decades old image of The Three Stooges paddling a canoe just sprang forth in my mind. He,He,He. WooWooWooo.... Did they get that canoe at Dewey, Cheatum and Howe? Pardon, It's late, the mind wanders and sleep beckons.

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

One of the nice things about the Souris River canoes is the exterior layer of the of their canoes is not Kevlar, but Fiberglass. It makes fixing cracks and other boo-boos a lot easier. There is a website by the famous, or maybe infamous, Joe Baltich at the Red Rock Lodge (RedRockStore.com)...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

I've got a Souris River Tranquility solo in my quiver of canoes and used it on my first solo trip into the BWCA. If the construction of their tandems are anything like this canoe they will be one tough boat for the weight. Another lucky unexpected Craigslist find down here in the South...
