    Cold Hauling

A quick Google search of "Carbon fiber in cold weather" came up with threads from a bunch of sites and general consensus is that Fiberglass, Kevlar and Carbon should be just fine. It seems that cold cracks are MOSTLY in Royalex canoes with aluminum gunwales.

    Now I’m in Deep

It is fun hoisting a light canoe in front of the "unenlightened". My wife, at 5'3 and a lightweight (numbers aren't available for publication) regularly get amazed looks and questions when she totes her Hornbeck "Lost Pond 10" to the lakeside. It weighs right at 14 lbs. When this...

    My New Northstar Phoenix

I had paddled a Phoenix set up for kneeling and liked it so I ordered mine with kneeling drops. I like to sit when lake tripping or paddling for speed, even though I don't race, but for this canoe I went for a bit more maneuverability. I also use a kneeling saddle in my Old Town H2Pro...

    Old Shaw and Tenney paddle

Thank you for the reply, Benson. I had planned on refinishing the Shaw and Tenney for my wife's use, but with the fairly clean labeling I will probably get some better photos to ad to my files before I monkey with it. If I can ascertain the production dates using this stamping, I hope to post...

    Old Shaw and Tenney paddle

When I picked up a wood and fiberglass (Northland Canoe, most likely) this weekend, it came with a few accessories. They included three old split Feather Craft paddles, which had seen much better days, and a Shaw and Tenney 48" paddle. The S&T has some repairable splits and I am planning on...

Stay safe in this big storm ...

Yep, a big storm. In Spartanburg, SC we ended up with 6.5" of rain in 14 hours according to the National Weather Service.

    Almost lost one

That must have been some storm! I once heard at a whitewater takeout: Owner: You can't destroy these Grummans. Kayaker: Yeah, no matter how much you want to. Glad to hear that it survived without damage; I don't think that I have a canoe that could withstand that beating. Do...

    What have I Got Here?

Thanks Glenn, I will probably varnish the keel along with the trim when the weather gets a bit warmer. The temps will top out in the 40's to low 50's this week. That is WINTER in the South! I usually wait till it hits the 60's before varnishing, and hope it is well before the pollen season...

    What have I Got Here?

Thanks for the photos; it looks like a sibling of mine. I am in hopes that mine will clean up that well. I am looking forward to sanding and finishing the gunwales and thwarts to pretty things up, but my first task will be to "waterproof" the keel. I am also wondering whether to use an oil...

    What have I Got Here?

Thank you Murat V! Wow, this canoe sure looks like and has all the earmarks of a Northland canoe. I had seen a Northland for sale on craigslist last year, but the asking price was a bit too dear for my wallet. I looked up info on it at the time, but had not remembered the Northland until your...

    What have I Got Here?

I would like to pick the brains of those in this forum and see if you know who may have made this canoe. This is my first wood canoe since I started paddling over four decades ago, so my knowledge is limited in this area. I hope to learn more about wood and canvas as I progress. I just pick up...

    Carbon Fiber/Aramid Layup - Why?

HI Black Fly, Last October I ordered my dream boat; a Northstar Phoenix in Blacklight with wood trim and internal skid plates. It arrived in November. It is stiff, handles great, and should be plenty tough for tripping. Weight on my bathroom scales in 30.1 lbs. I had paddled the Phoenix at the...

    My Perfect Solo River Canoe

Weird there is a bow seat in the Harmony “Solo.” That price must be In Canadian dollars. As per the Savage River website, the Harmony can be had in either Solo or Tandem. I guess the setup in the photo can do both; it has three seats (one is almost hidden by the dog). And yep the starting...

    My Perfect Solo River Canoe

I was curious about the Foxfire that you mentioned, so I just Googled "Foxfire Canoe" and there were no results. Who makes it? Northstar does not list it in their lineup; sounds a lot like the Firebird though. I sure like my Phoenix.
