Woodland Caribou Provincial Park is Closed due to fires

An acre of mature trees can capture 2.6 tonnes of CO2 per year. If we consider only half of the acres which burned to be mature trees that still equals 4,068, 626 tonnes of CO2 released back into the atmosphere. However, the following article suggest the forests in Canada emit more carbon...

Atikaki P.P. Park in Manitoba-Wallace Lake to Leyond, Berens and Pigeon Rivers

We had another Snowdown event last October and with the drought, low water and back country entry restrictions this year it is likely there is much tree damage on the Wanipigow R/ Broadleaf route as well as on the Mothers. We have not been in the area since 2017 thus have not done any portage...

    Alternatives for this site's future

would it be possible to download this entire site to external hard drives or such to save the content? Would be a real shame to lose all the older material as it cannot and will not be replicated. Then if it cannot be moved if that happens, it could be re-entered at a new site or left here and...

Woodland Caribou Provincial Park is Closed due to fires

Christine and I, having canoed Atikaki for 10 years always looked at the amount of wood on the ground and how dry it has been since 2013 that eventually the entire province would burn and it would appear to be this year. Since 2013 the snow pack has melted weeks before ice out thus the area...

Woodland Caribou Provincial Park is Closed due to fires

More than half the park has burned now but the big fire, Kenora 51 hit a natural fire line from a burn a few years ago to the north and is mostly advancing south into crown land. In the meantime, fires in Manitoba have burned the Bloodvein, Leyond, Barrens and Pigeon and are still active...

Quetico 11 day solo trip video

Snappers like that are common here in Manitoba. Rarely can a stringer be left soaking. On one lake someone had built a rock cage on the edge of the island we were on for keeping the fish in due to 2 giant snappers roaming around the island. Unfortunately I no longer have the photos due to hard...

    It's going away

Awww, no more epic Alan trips into the wild Canadian north. I haven't been on a canoe trip since 2017 due to having a panic attack on day two of a trip in 2016 and as much as I miss it, thinking about sleeping on the ground, fighting mosquito's on my middle of the night pee trip, setting up...

    Painting a fiberglass canoe..??

On the TLC boat just finished I rolled on Tremclad rust paint, it is inexpensive and of late Tremclad seems to be the only "rust" paint in Canada that is still oil based as the other companies are moving to water based. We have used Interlux Brightside topside paint but it is pricey and less...

    Seat Frame Mortise

This is pulled from the Swift Canoe website, 2020 parts list with prices. Swift is where i picked up 8" seat hanger bolts a couple years ago. Otherwise I order seat bolts from a company in the US that sells longer 10/24 and 10/32 carriage bolts in silicon bronze up to 6".

    Controlling Shop Dust?

This would be Christine's home made rig, works pretty well. Once it warms up I will throw open all the doors and blow the excess dust outside to contaminate someone else's property.
