One canoe to rule them all?

Whomever the paddler is, regardless of the hull attributes- she or he with the best fundamental paddle capabilities will succeed with the greatest of ease. Vertical paddle strokes on-side and off-side, micro-tuning the stroke throughout effort and reading the water best saves paddler energy and...

    My Perfect Solo River Canoe

The Hemlock SRT is just what it is. A solo river tripper. Certainly not a tandem, definitely not a lilly pad dipper and definitely a river tripper due to its length, width and composite build. No insult to the author, if you want a lower weight canoe, then lose the weight to meet your wants...

    My Perfect Solo River Canoe

Great topic with great suggestions. The reason there are so many hulls is because canoe builders do not agree on other hulls that have been built. Personal preference to their liking and disliking. We are very fortunate there are many, many canoe designers and builders! For example: not ever...

Japanese Whitewater: Entering and Exiting Eddies

Great suggestions Glenn. Moving your body mass to on-side to off-side, bow, mid or astern helps to reduce hull contact with the water and aids greatly to the effort being attempted. Art, in a few months let’s get on the Ducktrap and figure some of these details out. I have two solo play boats...

SRT spray deck, yes or no

Nice suggestion tomo. Yes, easy for me to stray from the initial inquiry. More often than not, slowing the canoe’s hull speed will allow the canoe to take on less water and keep the hull’s momentum going where you want it to go- “the line.” Always focus where you want to go, not ever where you...

Ocoee River whitewater paddling and rafting in the very early days (film)

Great video, thank you! Wife and I paddled the Ocoee in 1994. She paddled a Dagger Impulse while I was in Gyromax C-1. The rapid names sound familiar too. We were fortunate to stick around and watch the Hell Hole Festival the next day. Darn good boaters down there!!

SRT spray deck, yes or no

Golly Art, if you think the spray cover will add goodness to your SRT, go order one! Don’t hesitate, order purposefully and enjoy your days on the water. What color are you thinking of?

    CCS tarp :)

Been using a Big Agnes Ptarmigan ‘14x’14. Packs reasonably small and provides great coverage. Prefer the orange over the green. Orange casts a brighter mood than green on gloomy days. Not quite as bright as WolfsmanBrother!

SRT spray deck, yes or no

CCS built a spray deck for a Wenonah RX Rendezvous, yet I did not use it once. Conditions simply did not demand using the spray deck. I gave the buyer the spray deck for no additional cost. Also have a Northwater spray deck for my solo Dagger Caption. Used it once during a heavy wind driven...

SRT spray deck, yes or no

Hi Art, what causes you to want to add a spray cover to your SRT? Adding tie-downs/D-rings/adhesives and float bags to maintain buoyancy will certainly help. The Hemlock SRT has attributes for whitewater, yet is not a whitewater playboat. The attributes are flared bow, narrow beam, deep bow...

    RIP Fitz

Horrible news. Unfortunate to have not met Fitz other than on the net. Fitz was generous sharing pertinent information in many areas of canoeing and tripping. Truly an admirable trait. Life is not fair. As the saying goes: with every death, a library closes. Thank you Fitz, may you part...

    Northwind Solo river performance

skepaddle, Happy to help in building additional whitewater canoe skills. Best classroom is at Limington Rapids on Rt. 25 on the Saco River. Need to wait until late May, early June for water levels to drop and water temperatures to rise. Good levels are 1,300-800 cfs. I can provide a tougher...

    Dream canoe dream rigging

Thank you Glenn. Photos are not on the lap top, yet are on an album my phone. tomo, please let me know if different photos may help you in the outfitting of the SRT. Shots of my SRT with no additional outfitting. Thinking of adding thigh strap anchors on the floor and up on the sidewalls. I do...
