Connecticut River - Woodsville, NH to Orford, NH

Thanks Doug. We should do a Pemi run sometime before everything freezes up. I know Jonathan would be up for it.

Connecticut River - Woodsville, NH to Orford, NH

It reminded me of the Samuel Benton Campsite upstream in Maidstone, VT. That site is also on the edge of a hayfield.

Connecticut River - Woodsville, NH to Orford, NH

With work and family, it’s tough for me to get away to do long trips. Instead, I have been doing more long-weekends. One of the perfect rivers for these trips is the upper Connecticut – it’s not too far away (at least for me in RI), the river is pretty (but not exactly wilderness), and there are...

How high is too high on the CT River

Fortunately, we don't know the answer to the original question, but I can tell you that 5-6 feet (3K to 4K cfs) on the North Stratford gage is a perfect level for the the trip from Canaan to Bloomfield. When we put in on Wednesday, the level was 6 feet, 4000 cfs. By Friday it had dropped to 5...

How high is too high on the CT River

Leaving today for a couple of nights - Canaan to Maidstone Bridge. Nights might be a little cold, but should be fun otherwise. River is down to 4200, so that should be OK. We'll see...

How high is too high on the CT River

Dropping slowly - will probably be at a more reasonable level by the time we leave next week, but would still appreciate some first hand experience. I know one thing - there will be plenty of water.

How high is too high on the CT River

We were planning a trip on the upper Connecticut River (Canaan to Maidstone Bridge) next week. Just looked at the North Stratford gage, and it is almost 14,000 cfs - yikes. It was 500 cfs when we were there in the Fall. https://waterdata.usgs.gov/nh/nwis/uv?site_no=01129500 How high is too...

    Buying Canoe Advice for beginner

Do you pack light? Two people with gear in my 17' Spirit II didn't leave much room for a dog. I suppose if he is small he could stay between your legs. I'm sure some dog folks will respond.

    Wanted - Mohawk XL14

If you find a red one outfitted solo it may have been my father's. He bought one brand new back in the early 90's, but sold it before I got hooked on paddling. Big boat - carry a lot of gear, but I have never seen another one around. What are you looking to paddle with that boat?

Nice. Question is once it is done, will we ever be able to get you out of the shop and onto the river? ;)

    Hand wear in colder Temps

Thin neoprene gloves. NRS Hydroskins are OK. I like something thin enough that I can still take pictures.\

My Second Ever Canoe Trip Video

Nice video. Looks like a great trip - I'd like to get out there sometime. I use my Pentax Optio waterproof camera for video as well. No waterproof case required, so the audio is fine. I use the Fat Gecko Camera Mount...

Simulated Deep Water Self-Rescue Result: FAIL

I have tried many times to do a solo reentry - can't do it. I am pretty good at flipping my solo boat over so it is floating dry in the water - that might be easier than doing the boat over boat in wind or waves. If I have someone to hold the far gunwale, I can roll in pretty easy. So my...

When is it "too cold" to paddle?

I paddle year-round, and winter is actually my favorite time to paddle - especially in the snow or when there is snow on the ground. It's quiet and everything is white and clean. My biggest problem is finding people to paddle with. If there is snow on the ground my local paddling friends...

My misadventures on the Connecticut River...

We were upstream that weekend - Bloomfield, VT (North Stratford, NH) to Lunenburg, VT (South Lancaster, NH). My first time camping there. Seems like most of the sites are up pretty steep banks.
