    Lower Raquette River, ADK whitewater

What a Raquette! We’ll, it’s late January and well into canoe-trip-planning season. I’m looking at a few routes that I’ve never done before, but also hoping to return, for the third year in a row, down the Lower Raquette River in the northern Adirondacks. Not to be confused with the popular...

    The Petawawa: Algonquin's Whitewater River

I’ve always liked David’s videos. They’re always fun, interesting trips, and he’s usually a glutton for punishment with trips that don’t go as planned. Unfortunately, I think he got burned out on making YouTube canoe tripping videos. Coincidentally, Paul Mason’s Path of the Paddle came on right...

    Canoe Racing Pictures

The Peavine Whitewater Race on the White River of Vermont last spring. The only canoe race I’ve ever been in, and looking forward to it this year. Patrick says he’s running it solo this year so he doesn’t get yelled at 😂

    Colden Canoe Decks

@Glenn MacGrady Man, those are beautiful boats! The Bentley of canoes. Saltandsky posted a photo above that shows they were glued to an inset block underneath that was screwed in from the outwale. That’s a little harder for me to do with my rounded gunwales, unless I buy a $50 router bit.

    Colden Canoe Decks

@alsg Wow, that’s really nice! Very clean. The joints look remarkably similar to what I had imagined, but I think I’ll just go back to Elmers glue and roofing nails and call it a day.

    Colden Canoe Decks

@yellowcanoe I figured the edge molding was more for covering up the raw edge of the Kevlar sheer. It certainly does look clean. My original intent was to make bookmatched, inset decks. So, I went to my local specialty “Treehouse” and picked out a couple 1-5/8” thick walnut scraps with...

    Colden Canoe Decks

@saltandsky Thank you! That’s exactly what I was looking for. That makes more sense for a stronger connection. It’s essentially a rough inset deck with a beautiful cap on top. Would definitely have to make sure that’s all sealed really well. What a beautiful boat!!

    Colden Canoe Decks

I agree with all of that and assumed that was the case. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something. I guess it just doesn’t seem like a strong attachment with glue alone considering the rounded profile of the gunwales I’m using. I’ll have to make sure I fill that gap well to increase...

    Colden Canoe Decks

Does anyone know how Colden Canoe attached there wooden decks to their wooden inwales? I don’t see any screws in any of the photos I’ve seen, so it seems as though they were epoxied on or screwed from underneath before the outwales were screwed in. I’m refurbishing a Bell Merlin II B/G and...

    Tweener Pack

I swear by Watershed bags. Other than a blue barrel, nothing is more waterproof thanks to their unique ziplock seal. Their Animas is that 40L mid size you may be looking for. I got the military, navy seal issued version that is made of more durable material (think Hypalon) and has a built in...

Padding on cross bars for canoe?

I use Yakima Load Stops with minicell foam glued to both surfaces for padding to protect the finish on all my wood gunwales. The load stops really lock the boat in place, making bow and stern lines unnecessary. Minicell foam is much more durable than pool noodle or pipe insulation foam but still...

    Photo of the day

Hi Patrick! The rivers here are pretty sensitive to water levels, and are generally too low for the later half of the summer. It was around 900cfs on Sunday and we were still scraping through the shoals in the wide spots. It’s generally class I below Bolton, but it’s a really fun, varied and...

    Photo of the day

Thanks. Unfortunately, it was an Orvis Outlet rod that carries no warranty. As it was explained to me, someone else likely snapped the tip, returned it under warranty and took the option to upgrade to a current model. Orvis repaired, rebadged as Outlet, and resold it through their outlet to me...

    Photo of the day

We don’t get a babysitter often, but when we do, my wife often chooses to go out in the canoe! I’m a lucky man, even if we don’t catch any fish and I snap my new carbon fly rod stumbling out of the boat 😫. Sunday on the Winooski River, Bolton, VT.

    Question about a Vermont Indy...

Late reply but figured you should know that was Jim’s Indy. The smaller Slipper was Nancy’s (pretty neat all Airex construction). The leading edge of the seat in my Indy is about 97” as well. Though, I get better handling with a 4pack of premium pints stowed just behind my toes while...

Mad River Canoe - Been Nice to Know You

I live about 40 minutes north of the original MRC factory where all four of the MR boats I’ve owned were made. Still have two. A ‘91 Kevlar Indy, first year made, and a ‘02 Kevlar Explorer, one of the last to float out of the factory, made in Oct ‘01 for the ‘02 model year. I had the...

What is your local day paddle?

Erica, It’s called The Maine Lounger by Byer of Maine. I liked my friend’s so I found one on eBay. Relatively light, pulls apart into two pieces and packs flat but too awkward for long portages and requires a little extra cushion. I keep a foam z-rest seat with it that packs in between the two...
