Cod Pond Flow: Beavers and Otter and Geese, Oh My! Adirondacks

Snapper, No guidebook I know of. I've paddled it all summer and fall. Water depth is never a problem. You just have to get out more often for dams. It's close to home so is one of my favorite day trips. Good moose country too. I'm sure you could zip up there and do a day trip pretty easily...

Cod Pond Flow: Beavers and Otter and Geese, Oh My! Adirondacks

YC, Yup a day trip although there are some nice sites to be found. It's located off of Rt. 8, west of Bakers Mills. There is actually a fun through paddle that ends where we started. It starts with a 2 mile carry to a couple of ponds that then leads to the flow. That's a good full day.

Cod Pond Flow: Beavers and Otter and Geese, Oh My! Adirondacks

Judi and I took our first real trip of the season Sunday into Cod Pond Flow. We weren't sure of the conditions of the ponds at this point so it seemed prudent to go with the flow. The 1 mile hike in is a snowmobile trail so it varied from snow to rotten snow to ice to mud to perfectly dry...

    Raquette Lake canoe loop

So many blue spots on the map. So little time. :) Looking at it now it might make more sense to just go in and out Sucker Brook instead of a loop. It's been on the list for a few years.

    Raquette Lake canoe loop

I've looked at coming from Queer Lake on through to Raquette. Made it as far as Windfall Pond with the boats once on a recon trip.

    Sun Screen buying time again

Bullfrog for me. Waterproof, no scent and it isn't oily.

    Who's getting old?

Age is something I can't keep up with. It startles me to realize I will turn 57 this June, but as long as I'm still enjoying doing the same stuff I was doing at 40 and 25 (and 12) how can I complain? Sure I take it a little slower, but I also know how to do it easier and savor it a little more.

    Spring Triathlon

Judi and I did an Adirondack Triathlon on Sunday, starting out with a morning at Gore Mt. Then back home for a quick cross country ski in the back woods. Then it was time to get the boats out. Easily enough since we keep them in the hay mow for the winter. And on to the south end of...

Vacuum bag sealer system users speak out.

I have a Foodsaver vacuum sealer and only use it for camping mostly because of the cost of bags. Since I rely on Hawk Vittles for most of my dinners and he uses the vacuum bags, I sometimes use them to divide a double meal into a single and re-seal them. The bags are nice because you can add...

    Solo Swamping II

I've got to say after reading your Solo Swamping I, I thought I would reconsider and it might be nice to take the boats south some long winter. But after reading this episode, I think I will stay north. Reptiles and underwater mammals big enough to swamp your canoe might be over the line for me...

Trip Reports NY, VT, NH and ME Lake Trip

Wonderful report. We stayed at #6 on Little Tupper the weekend after you. Thanks for leaving it so nice. My GF said she'd seen a large garter snake near the stump. After seeing your photo, I understand what she meant. We too had a nice visit from Sarah, on her way back from delivering a thunder...

    Fall Stream

Looks good sg! I still haven't made it to Fall Stream. Sunday afternoon we did a quick trip up the Jessup. My GF has a Lumix camera and I am amazed at the pictures she gets. Very handy little camera and the rechargeable battery packs last really well.

Hornbeck New Trick Black Jack 12

Om - It's strictly a sit on bottom, double paddle boat. While it is a bit "tippier" then the original design, it still has good secondary stability. GM - On the crappy scale I have it weighed 14 lbs with the foot pegs installed. I'm told the wood trim version adds about 4 lb. The New Trick...

Hornbeck New Trick Black Jack 12

Picked up a Black Jack New Trick 12 footer last week and for me, it's a game changer. First of all let me state I don't know canoes like a lot of people here know canoes. I've had a classic shaped Hornbeck Black Jack since they came out and have loved the mobility it allows me. Paddling on...

    MIL wants a boats

Don't forget Hornbeck Boats. www.hornbeckboats.com Even lighter and their classic Rushton shape is very stable once yoiu get seated. I agree about trying her in a kayak first. Plus it is paddled with a double paddle.

    Header Picture submissions

I was thinking about the picture the other day, I met Willis for the first and only time just before that picture. That's the beaver dam between Little Tupper and Round Pond. Memorial Day weekend 2010.
