Any plans for the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse?

I went to the barber shop in downtown Camden Maine to get my post chemo fuzz trimmed, barber kept looking out the window with his glasses. “Hey, I’m over here” Driving home was strange, no traffic but lots of folks standing out on their lawns looking up in the sky. Got home, yup, wife is...

Supermarket Food Ideas for Extended Tripping

I like Idahoan Potatoes and Hungry Jack hash browns too. I didn’t know that cooked bacon will last at room temp, good tip. I bring pancake mix and real maple syrup, there’s something about a big pancake with local blueberries topped with great maple syrup eaten right out of the cold handle…

WTB: Family style canoe (OT Camper, Penobscot, etc?) in Royalex

That Tripper looks great, and that Penobscot should pop back into shape with a set of new gunnels. I have no experience with factory aluminum gunnels (except removing them), but a nice set of wood gunnels will fix that canoe up nice. Actually, if it was me, I’d replace those gunnels on the...

Nice canoe, a real classic at a very reasonable price. Good luck with the sale.

WTB: Family style canoe (OT Camper, Penobscot, etc?) in Royalex

After giving it some thought, $500 for a Camper needing gunnels is too much up here in New England. But, if the wood isn’t punky and you can get away with a small repair, then any price around $500 seems right. But here are some ideas on replacing gunnels that I have used. Below is a picture of...

WTB: Family style canoe (OT Camper, Penobscot, etc?) in Royalex

Patching the gunnels isn’t that hard, even replacing them isn’t difficult. You can do a quick patch and then replace the gunnels later if needed. The GFlex repair sounds correct. For $500 that’s a perfect canoe for a family.

WTB: Family style canoe (OT Camper, Penobscot, etc?) in Royalex

An Old Town Camper is a great canoe for a fisherman/camper, and they were built with Oltanar Roylex which makes them lighter than most Roylex canoes. There’s one in Austin on FB marketplace, seller doesn’t show bottom pics, and the wood trim might be a deal breaker for some, but for $500 with...

The sacrifices we make in life for paddling

My 3 children are a year and a half apart (twins plus one). We got them involved in sports at an early age and we supported them by coaching baseball/softball, officiating at swim meets, and even running the refreshment stand thru 4 years of high school football. In the early 90’s my home every...

    Too cold to paint, so...

Me either, I have had some laminated paddles, (nothing expensive) but they never lasted. I have used ash beavertails so long I wouldn’t feel comfortable with modern lightweight wood or plastic canoe paddles. Very nice work Patrick, looks like that Curley maple will turn out a beautiful canoe...

    Mad River cold crack repair

I picked up an explore with a cold crack. I temporarily blue taped the outside, then layed the canoe on its side and filled the crack with GFlex. I then installed new robust (1” from top to bottom) gunnels/inwales with screws on either side of the crack. I feel these thick gunnels really help...

    Spring greetings from Connecticut

Welcome, I lived in the Winsted, Ct area for many years before moving to Maine 4 years ago. Some very nice paddling opportunities in your area.

Tarp type and set-up style, and let's see some pix

I picked this up from Campmore in NJ many years ago 10’x12’. The corners ripped out, so I used to wrap little stones in the corners, then secure them with cord, then tie it down with truckers hitch and quick release knots. Finally, I sewed canvas corners in, it’s still going strong. I depend on...

Any plans for the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse?

Careful folks, any negative thoughts gets you labeled as a doom and gloomer by a certain member from Portland (no, not the real Portland in Maine), this one’s on the left coast. (Even bigger grin)
