    Fiberglass inside stems

The plank ends look worse than they really are, if epoxy doesn't save them, I'll scarf on new ends or spline the splits. there will be an outer stem covering the ends of the planks also, the old was one piece sawn white oak, but I made the new as just the inner for now. You probably know...

    Fiberglass inside stems

Jim, I know this is a total derail of the topic I know, but for those that may be wondering about purpose of a stem in a traditional boat (Delaware Ducker I'm restoring). It is a major structural element in traditional boat building, The last photo, I really like outer stems, they look good...

    Fiberglass inside stems

Let me go on record saying, stems are not that hard to make! unless you try you'll never know! Whether they be steam bent or laminated they look "right" in a canoe (they are not needed in a strip build)

    Fiberglass inside stems

It's been I guess over 20 years now but if I remember right, we would turn the canoe on its side and lay glass flat on only one side inside the stem, (it was also only 2 or 3 feet long). When set we'd do the other side, it was so much easier to have gravity working with us rather than against us.

Canned food v dehydrated & packed water

take it you've never been on a salt water kayak trip? No one mentioned salt water, I assumed he was talking about a river because it was mentioned, whatever fresh food will keep in a cooler for 2 to 3 days and if the trip is longer than that then, dehydrated packaged and canned food can...

    canvas damage and repairs needed

No, not good advice, maybe if it were a no name unknown, glass would ok. It can create more problems than it can solve not to mention the additional weight. Glassing w/c canoes is actually more difficult than doing canvas.

Nokomis Wood Workers First Canoe Build

Ben something I always did when we were building was to use the seat cross rails as a guide for the scupper spacing. For example, if the bolts for the seats were 12" apart, then the scuppers would be laid out so the 12" would be centered on spacers rather than a space.

    Cedar Stip Repair Advice Sought

Of course I don't have personal knowledge about how your boat was built or how many layers of glass it has. this is just my own experience talking. They make great bath tubs don't they? It was always a big personal argument I had when we were building these things; More glass, less...

    Cedar Stip Repair Advice Sought

The most difficult part of repairing strip canoes is getting the varnish off. If you sand it with a power sander you will have yellow dust when you finally get into the epoxy & glass dust will be grayish be white. You can also use a heat gun and scraper but most people don't choose to go...
