First Build: 17'-6" J. Winters "Yukon"

The gunnel top surfaces tip slightly to the exterior. I trued them up side to side with a block plane except for where they approach the stems. I’m planning small, simple cambered decks. Hopefully everything will blend nicely.

    Four Best Two-Way Satellite Communicators

We like our Garmin InReach Explorer plus which we've had for about 5 years. We got it so our kids can contact us in an emergency, but the SOS feature with interactive communication is a nice feature which we hope never to need. It came preloaded with topo maps of the US, Canada and Mexico. It's...

First Build: 17'-6" J. Winters "Yukon"

Thanks Jim! There's no glass on the interior surfaces where the copper pipe passes through. The interior fiberglass (6 oz. S-glass) stops a couple inches short of the vertical portion of the interior stems. There's 2 coats of epoxy on the wood there, the wet-out and 1 fill coat. I was a little...

First Build: 17'-6" J. Winters "Yukon"

Has anyone else ever dropped a year and a half on a canoe build? I did. 2022 was a good year, but not for our boat build. Home stretch now though. I have some time to work and a deadline. We’re planning fall trips in September and October. I decided to install Gilpatrick style low line...

What is your traditional canoe kit for tripping?

We always take a traditional black ash pack basket. I realize the contents are not secure in an upset, but the convenience of an open top container is really nice, so we risk it.

    (Finally) starting from scratch.

You're making great progress and your hull looks really nice. On my build I used clear packing tape on the forms and had no tape transfer to the hull. Thanks for taking time to post your build in such nice detail.

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

Advise that's been helpful for me on up and downstream travel is to focus on where you want to go, not on what you want to avoid. Not exactly sure how that works, but it seems to.

JW Kite build - ready for Gunwales

I think you can keep tapering until it pleases your eye, keeping everything square and sharp until you've added necessary thickness at seat and thwart locations. Rounding over is the easy part and with the skills you've demonstrated so far you won't have a problem. Nice work!

Pros and Cons of Guided Canoe Trips

I'm thinking it appropriate to report on Karen and mine's first ever guided trip. We've only been canoe tripping since 2017, with an inherited canoe and equipment from our family car camping days. We booked a trip on the St. John River in northern Maine for May 15-21, 2023. It's a river and...

Maine Canoe Symposium June 3-4, 2023

Karen and I made it also. The MCS continues to be a really special event. We attended several paddling clinics, the NFCT presentation, Goonstroke's "Exploring Maine's Lost Canoe Routes", and poling, tarps and shelters, and sketching clinics. Benson was there offering workshops on canoe sailing...

Should tandem paddlers ever paddle on the same side?

When Karen and I first started paddling and tripping we'd customarily paddle on opposite sides and each do our own thing, she in the bow and I in the stern. Different cadences and often I would use a paddle with more surface area. I did a lot of correction strokes. In 2019 we greatly benefited...

Should tandem paddlers ever paddle on the same side?

We paddle on the same side when conditions are like those described in the article.
