    Made my own canoe pole

This post made my day! Thank You! I enjoyed seeing how you worked a found pole quickly into such an efficient tool to propel your canoe. Graceful, elegant, beautiful.

Time for Maine, looking for ideas

I've learned the hard way not to rejoice at freshly graded North ME Woods roads. Grading seems to reset all the shale razorblades. Driving SLOW helps a lot, and I always carry 2 full size spares.

    Maine Canoe Symposium

Karen and her 3 older siblings learned to ride a unicycle growing up. Somehow she ended up with it and over the years would bring it to school where she teaches and ride it dressed up as a clown on special event days. She hadn't ridden it in a long while, so practiced in our driveway the day...

    Maine Canoe Symposium

Karen and I made a long day trip to Bethel, ME last Saturday to attend the ME Canoe Symposium. We'd never been, it was their 35th year, and it was stellar! There were two tracks; land and water. Karen covered land, as she's on crutches nursing a broken foot (unicycle crash). Ray Reitze and Gil...

Paddles: Tell me about ottertail shape and butternut wood

I have no experience using a butternut ottertail paddle, but some experience using butternut for interior finish trim. Around here butternut is sometimes referred to as "poor man's black walnut". It is a joy to work with. Light, soft, stable, but not particularly strong. I'm curious as to...

    Wannigan or storage box?

Looking good! I built some Gilpatrick style trip boxes a few years ago. They have shoe box style lids which are simple and watertight. I like how your box fills its space without sticking above the gunwales.

    It's going away

Alan, your thoughts resonate with many, including myself. I think changing interests and hobbies over time is normal and healthy. Personally, I'm happiest when I have a new challenge to try and wrap my mind around. Sometimes it's delving deeper into something, and other times trying something...

    Seat Frame Mortise

Cutting out the contoured rail from solid stock is perfectly fine If wood quality and grain orientation is suitable. Straight, tight grain, knot free and quarter sawn is best. Rift sawn can work. You need to avoid grain runout through the contour. These qualities are not always easy to find, and...

    What are you reading?

"Upwards", by Laurie Apgar Chandler. The story of the first woman to solo thru-paddle the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. I'm halfway through and enjoying it. Well written, interesting and informative.

    Gunnel plug

I think a carefully fitted plug on the top surface would be sufficient. You can be as fussy as you want regarding grain and color match. I'd glue it.

SkilSaw Method for Strip Cutting ... a primer

I scarfed short, rough sawn boards together to make long boards for full length strips. Then used a chalk line, skil-saw and block plane to establish a straight, smooth edge. Then the skil-saw method to rip strips. I did not plane the rough sawn boards to thickness before ripping strips. I sized...

    Glad to be here

Welcome! Karen and I also enjoy Green River reservoir, but we're careful about when we go.

    Carbon / Kevlar BLACK Pearl

I like the concept of the seat back-carry yoke. Very clever Jim!

    Thus build the Raven, evermore

You're making great progress! I think tapering your outwales and rounding them in to the outer stem would look nice. I believe there are marine bedding compounds available that might work to fill small gaps between the hull and gunwales.

    Dog PFD

We want to get our 30 pound Brittany, Libby, a PFD before the start of this season. She loves the water and swims well, but is prone to overconfidence and poor judgement. Last Spring when we stopped to pick fiddleheads on an island in the Winooski River she decided to go for a swim and jumped...
