    Adirondacks soon

Due to work, I wont be able to do more than weekend trips for a few more months. Thus my upcoming trips to the Adirondacks are quick overnighters. First canoe trip is next weekend, Sat-Sun.

    Playing around with Alcohol Stoves

A friend has a basic jetted pepsi-can stove. he used it for his entire AT hike (a decade ago) and continues to use it. My Fancee Feest has held up well for the few years I have had it. I don't see needing to replace it soon. Even when I do, it will cost me less than a dollar. For fuel, I use...

    SUP Tripping: Realistic or Ridiculous?

My wife has a SUP. It appears to be a fun watercraft to use in nice conditions but not a viable choice as a vessel for travel. Recreational day use allows one to opt out in less than appropriate weather. If used for travel, less than optimal conditions might prove dangerous.

    Portage Pack or Dry Bag

Most of my trips involve significant portaging. Apparently much more than most here. It is a tripping style thing. Because of that, I single carry. When solo, I have just a sealine portage pack which is surprisingly comfortable even on mile+ portages. When tandem, I still carry the portage pack...

I agree with others. HOOP, your info is fascinating. Some I knew, but most is new. Dig the old photo too. Any books you would recommend?

Length considerations for a canoe axe: function and safety

My comment wasn't aimed at general use, but the specific way it is used. Processing wood can take many different forms as mentioned by others. It depends on what sized wood and how one intends to process it. I never have the need to split large logs, I don't swing the hatchet even kneeling. The...

Length considerations for a canoe axe: function and safety

IMO safety is a result of function. When one uses a tool designed for one function in a different manner, safety may be compromised. Thus, handle length and head weight should be decided based on the individual's intended use. The right tool for the job mantra. The safest tool is the one used as...

Come on Baby Light My Fire!

I carry matches and a bic lighter. I also have a small bag of birch bark which I use/refill on trips. Like others, birch bark, fuzz sticks, hairthin twigs from spruce or hemlock then build from there. Lighting fires with a single match has always been fun for me starting as a kid. It cintinues...

    New Year plans...

I have a growing list which includes both paddling and backpacking trips. My current issue/problem is I have so many places that I like to go, that the number of trips to "explore something different" are decreasing. One of my "plans" is to do more exploring this year. But I say that every year...

    How many knives?

Depends on the trip. I always have my Buck nano folder. It is my "everything else bag". On occasion I will bring my old mora w/birch handle as it is the better tool to carve up tent stakes, hot-dog sticks, cut steak, etc... Less often I will have one of my folding saws and/or mini-hatchet. The...

The Sharp edge....looking for reason in a fog of fad......

For the incredible righteous of lightness, they eschew the larger knife as well. Some go as far as to pack just a razor blade. In their defense, it isn't smugness as it is bringing what is needed. Not to mention, not all of us canoe trippers carry heavy loads. Depending on the trip, there is...

The Sharp edge....looking for reason in a fog of fad......

Agreed. Made many a fire in all kinds of conditions before ever hearing of the idea of batoning. Sqaw wood, feather sticks, saw-split. All kinds of ways to get dry wood in the wettest conditions without a large knife. I suppose if one has a big knife for another purpose, then it makes sense to...

So, what old item do you still use?

I, too, like my old wool (and my new). I have a number of wool pendleton shirts which I love to wear. I also have old worsted wool dress pants which have transitioned into my camping pants. My military surplus wool is ok, the casual wool clothes from days gone by are much more comfortable to me.

Why do so many newbies have no fear?

With technologically advanced safety items, I think many people in the backcountry (not just water) get "Gear Muscles".

    Who brought the turkey?

Cooked turkey and trimmings last week in the open fire on my trip. Used foil as I hiked in a few miles. On many trips I eat "real " food, especially the first night.
