3 day father & son trip: Haliburton's Frost Centre

Thanks everyone. Needless to say, I was very relieved that he enjoyed himself. Don't want to force my passion for paddling onto him. Martin, finally discovered the origins of that canoe last year. Got it in a trade for an old plastic fishing boat. All indications point that it is an older model...

    DIY Rodent-proof Food Bag

YC, did your mouse climb up the barrel itself or climb up the harness to gain access? I usually take the harness off once in camp especially before stashing it somewhere. Figured animals could get a good grip on the harness straps it if it was still on.

    Dropping in from down under.

Welcome Frogmouth. Post some pics of your river journeys when you get the chance. Always great to see tripping photos from other parts of the world. Wasn't there another Aussie member here who made his own camping gear? I remember a post about a home-made baker tent made from a military canvas...

    DIY Rodent-proof Food Bag

Guess if you put an Ursack inside one of these steel mesh sacks it would be both rodent and bear proof?

3 day father & son trip: Haliburton's Frost Centre

Happy to report that I finally managed an overnighter with my 7 year old son. He's been comfortable in the canoe for years but only showed interest in camping overnight this summer. Wanted to give him a nice experience for his first trip so planned a 3 day, 2 night simple loop in a familiar area...

Nice to hear you had a good trip. Fantastic pictures that really capture the scenery of Algonquin's West side. Good thing you got your trip in before the fire ban.

    Marshall Lake 2016

Welcome back. So glad you got to enjoy yourself Robin! Slowing down and enjoying the location has become my favorite part of tripping. By the way, all the photos are showing up on my end, including the one with the caribou! What a treat to have no one on a pristine lake, plenty of fish biting...

Shortcut repairs to get this Chesnut in the water.

Finally did some basic repair work on a 14' Chestnut Playmate / Peterborough Mermaid picked up last fall. Luckily, the woodwork was in outstanding shape except for some minor issues that could be handled with some exterior, water resistant wood filler and a coat of varnish. Had some of this...

100 Algonquin Lakes in 100 days

Came across an article about a paddler from Ottawa who's trying to paddle 100 different lakes in Algonquin Park over the summer weekends. Since starting on the Victoria Day weekend back in May, he's already covered 47 lakes. His blog site might interest those who want to see more of Algonquin's...

Moon River Loop via Healey and Kapikog Lakes

Wow. Pretty hardcore trip given your late Saturday start. Credit to you guys for not giving up on nature after such a blood-letting and skin swelling experience. Those little crown land lakes sound like a real treat to get away from the crowds. Any clue when the map you mentioned is going to be...

Removing sponsons from a w/c canoe.

The April 2016 Issue of Wooden Canoe (Vol 39, No.2) from the WCHA has a detailed article about sponsons which goes into detail about how to take them off with minimal damage. Apart from removing the obvious screws on the inside of the hull (2 per rib), sponsons were also installed with large...

    Peterborough Model 1492, The Champlain

Nice find. Could those vertical nail holes on the inwale & outwale be from an attempt to add decorative top rails and make it look like a closed gunnel boat? Seems ludicrous to nail vertically every 6" for any other reason. Not sure if you've seen this nifty writeup on the history of the...
