Trail Cameras: Recommendations for, pictures/videos from, and any comments about

My Reveal X camera can be set up to send pictures to your cell phone, there is an app that explains the fees. You can set up your camera to delay the frequency of images so when a group of deer comes in you don’t get a ton of pictures of them. I think the monthly fee is $5 and up, if you have a...

    The Bear Essentials

I received my pack saw carrying case today. It’s made for a slightly smaller pack saw built by the owner of Bear Essentials and I knew that when I ordered it, but, if I move the cover snap one inch my old Schmidt Pack saw fits nicely.

Marshall Lake loop- NW Ontario (July 2024)

Some interesting comparisons; Large flat rock campsite Gamma passed but I used in 2013, at daybreak I was awakened to something large walking in the river, I ran out in my skivvies and witnessed the biggest moose (# 7 on this trip) I have ever seen. He swam across the river and when he exited...

I have a Reveal X trail camera that my sons suggested, it can be tied to your cell phone for instant notification. I have it out back in my woodlot just for fun, no one hunts there. Lots of deer, turkeys, crows etc. actually so many that I turned the cell phone notifications off and now just...

    Weatherproof Gear Boxes and Cases

When I canoe/camp with my wall tent/wood stove I use a wanigan made of 1/4” plywood. It’s got a foam gasket around the lid and two leather straps to hold the lid tight. It’s basically waterproof, but I have never tested it. It carries a lot of stuff, it’s easy to over do it, and is really handy...

Thanks for sharing such an interesting event. I can only imagine the effort and skill required to build them.

Marshall Lake loop- NW Ontario (July 2024)

That’s a good start, I camped at Dog Island my first time thru, and another time I was on Marshall I met a First Nation guy and his wife “I’m George, that’s Alice”, he told me his grandmother built that trappers cabin for his grandfather. He was an interesting guy and one of my great regrets in...

    The Bear Essentials

Yes, that was my idea back when, I thought it would be a good way to support the smaller craftsman out there who don’t have a big advertising budget. Word of mouth only goes so far. I’m waiting for my pack saw carrying case. Unfortunately I believe my old SchmidtPack Saw might be a little too...

    The Bear Essentials

I just received two waxed canvas pouches from this company, perfect fit for my more traditional outfit. I also ordered a buck saw carrying case made of waxed canvas. I like the pouches as they have belt loops so you can attach them to your belt when you go out berry picking or tinder gathering...

What U.S. or Canadian documentation do you need to cross into the other country and back?

I carry a passport card, good only for Mexico and Canada by land travel only, not air. Recently I crossed into Canada at Cornwall, Ontario, and something raised a red flag as my car was searched. Probably a solo adult male with friends in Ontario. On the way home I crossed at a remote Maine...

A La Mer du Nord 2025

This is all posted in French but FB can translate it, I have lots of free time to do that …haha. There is a nice video but I can’t figure out how to attach it here. It’s in French, but us wood canvas guys all speak the same language anyway, it’s pretty interesting.

A La Mer du Nord 2025

(I will post updates as the story develops for those who don’t have a Facebook account) In the summer of 2025, a brigade of adventurers will embark on a crazy adventure: trekking aboard cedar canoes the 1200 km of the ancestral Route des Furrures, from Tadoussac to James Bay. To learn...
