Five day base camp trip on Seboeis Lake in Maine

It was a good trip, spending time with Allan again was a lot of fun, we joked, evaluated almost everyone ;):(:ROFLMAO::), ate well, sat out the wind, and enjoyed the calm conditions. I want to publicly Thank Allan for pretty much carrying my butt, I would have never been able to hump my gear up...

New gear for 2024 and 2025?

I’m pretty sure I will replace my wall tent (for back country camping) with a Frost River 2 man Campfire Tent. I need to lighten my back country outfit and after seeing lowangle Al’s last week, I’m sold on it. 25 lbs, no tarp needed and only 3 lightweight aluminum poles. Sitting under the front...

That’s good news, it would be nice if there where more options for circuits but those they give now are a good start.

Tripping Sights and Sounds You Miss

The first hints of water thru the trees at the end of a portage. The smell of campfire on my clothes. The view of the wilderness that frames my canvas packs and wooden canoe out in front of me. The water dripping off my paddle on a windless day. Anticipating the tail slap as a beaver moves...

What's your morning routine on canoe trips?

Head down to the water and have a coyote breakfast, that is, kneel down, take a drink, wash my face and have a good look around. Really, at my age, I hope to make it to the latrine, then wash up, boil some water for tea, get the pancake batter mixed, ad some blueberries if its August. Maybe some...

Bent vs. Straight Shaft Paddles—A Jacobson vs. Callan Debate

Yes, I pretty much owe everything I know about wood canvas canoes and working on them to Schuyler Thomson. Politics and choice of paddles, not so much. :-)

Yes, it was a great report, I followed your tracking every day and then enjoyed the text and pictures of the report itself. Thanks for letting me join in with comparison images and my thoughts. My days of doing a trip like this are over, so it meant a lot to me to reminisce. Thank You

Show us pictures of your canoe dogs

Moose, the one and only time he’s been in a canoe. He really loves my wife and doesn’t like cars so I leave him home.

    Best & worst campsites ever?

Virgin Timber Landing on Lows Lake in NY has always been a favorite of mine. I’m not sure if it’s really my favorite as I have camped on some beautiful sites in Canada, but. I have gone back to VTL many times thru the years.

That looks like it’s 14/15’ with only one thwart? I’m a “new” big fan of Total Strip, but everyone has their preferences. I remove the canvas before striping to be able to wipe and wash the gunk off the outside of the canoe as it seeps thru the spaces between planks. I assume you will be...

    A Molded Plywood Canoe

When I was 7, my first experience in a canoe was a 16’ molded plywood canoe built in Manitoba by a company called Plycraft. 1955, Cobden, Ontario ( I have shared this photo here before) I’m in the bow with my two brothers 1967, my last trip with the canoe before joining the army, Sadly...

Marshall Lake loop- NW Ontario (July 2024)

I remember that port from Stone to Ara, wet. I had to wait out the wind on Ara and hung out at the one campsite on the lake, washed those muddy clothes and had some tea, I did meet those folks from the lodge, they even offered me lunch but I was headed for the last campsite of the trip. I had...

I too am enjoying this trip report, great pictures but no selfies? These two shots over 10 years apart, that same dead tree is in the river, In Memaquay’s picture below there’s a tree with clothes hanging in it. When I stayed there the tree was blown over, and I found a large egg shaped rock...
