PortagePal to carry paddles and fishing rods

I’m not sure how I ever managed to complete one portage without the aid of a PortagePal. I expect we will soon be graced with threads on various ways to store our PortagePal, best PortagePal gloves, available colors, grips, “stripper-builds PortagePals, traditional PortagePals made of wood and...

Marshall Lake loop- NW Ontario (July 2024)

Thanks, that’s an awesome idea but I’m even done with walking portages. Those two mile longs at the end of the Marshall Lake circuit would be too hard for me without the 65lb wood canvas canoe, the hamstrings are not there anymore. I have a road trip planned for nw Ontario in August, hoping...

    Wood gunwales decisions?

I have found 8 to 10’ ash and 16’ spruce on Craigslist and FB Marketplace in Connecticut and here in Maine. I used the hardwood for the inwales and spruce for the gunnels, all with 8”” splices. They have held up well.

Ray Mears' Bushcraft - Canoe Journey

I have watched this a few times, I enjoyed it every time. @53:20. “Sometimes when we use modern equipment, we try to exclude nature….”

Shoutout your local whitewater boat builder

Yes, you are correct. It’s a loaded tripping canoe, not a play boat, best to pick the safest line on a remote northern river. My only concern is the gif is using a plastic paddle in a wood canvas canoe.

What Benson said, Headwaters Canoe in Quebec builds prospectors (real prospectors of of an original Chestnut form)

A La Mer du Nord 2025

I’m guessing those curves on the bottom are stems and the rest will be two piece gunnels. I believe they are making 3 more canoes.

A first boat is covered with "filler": this gray coating will make the canvas resistant and waterproof. When it's dry, in two good weeks, a coat of green paint will be applied, and it'll start to look like a Tremblay boat! In the photo: Rodrigue Pelchat and Roger Jacques, veteran craftsmen of...

Ontario Crown Land non-resident camping permits

One year I stopped at a small outdoor store in Temagami, (not there anymore), and as I was paying for my items the owner offered a tent rental receipt when he saw that I was buying some topo’s. I took it, but went back and bought my kids a bunch of tee’s. The tent rental receipt nullified the...

    Useful Youtube for Canoe Tripping

Some of my favorites- Recently completed an impressive solo trip in the NWT, his channel is somewhat all over the place but well worth the effort to follow. https://youtube.com/@calem_watson_adventurer?si=S2Fi1kFy8gNVDp8M Impressive young Canadian, lots of nice canoeing/trapping/dog sledding...

A La Mer du Nord 2025

The recipe of the "filler", this kind of dough that is put on the canvas of the canoe and which, when drying, will make them waterproof and resistant, is THE best kept secret of any canoe builder. A real magic potion that contains, among other, linseed oil, terebenthin and many other ingredients...

Yes, sometimes I use the Facebook/Google translation features, sometimes they already present both french and english versions of the same post. I’m not sure if Joey Haswish’s was a translation or his own version. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is trilingual.

We are very much looking forward to the great meeting of Lake Obatogamau, in mid-July 2025, where the North Sea Brigade will converge with the Attikamekw Brigade, composed of experienced rowers from the Tapiskwan Sipi and Tciman expeditions. Led by Joey Awashish, this brigade will have taken...

A La Mer du Nord 2025

The canoes are 16 feet long. The model is "Chibougamau", which is comparable to the Prospector. The forms from the Tremblay canoes were all destroyed in the 80's, but veteran artisans from Tremblay Canoes Roger Jacques and Rodrigue Pelchat built new forms afterwards: it's the ones that we use...
