Mad River Canoe - Been Nice to Know You

I’m going to look at what I think is either a Malecite or Explorer, hoping for Malecite, in the next few days. It’s been maintained pretty good from my understanding. I already know I want this, but I won’t know the material until I go and see it. The seller mentioned she had reached out to MR...

    Physical Conditioning for Canoe Tripping

Being physically beat down is so hard to manage, it goes straight to your head. It’ll ruin a good time real quick! And being real sick for a few days, no thanks! Not even your favorite low key movies will save you. I definitely try to stay active. Snowboarding, snowshoeing but especially the...

    303 Preservative on Composite Canoes

This is kind of a tough one because it is safe for your composite boats, neoprene or latex gaskets on your dry suit. It’s non petroleum based so there won’t be any trails left behind in the water or have any short/long term effects on aquatic life. Which makes me feel a little better about using...

    Coffee cups, insulated or not.

I have one lightweight insulated mug that I use from camping to coffee shops to home use. It doesn’t have the insulating properties quite like a yeti, but long enough for me to enjoy my tea or coffee. It’s also nice to feel the warmth through it on those cooler days/nights sitting around a...

How many pairs of footwear: in canoe vs. on portage vs. in camp?

Astral Brewer for most paddling days, barefoot inside or a thin wool sock for extended portages (light cush). The grip on Astral is phenomenal. I’d wear Astrals while river surfing/river SUPing and my feet never left the board even while I was dunking under. Chaco Z2 sandals also come along on...

Fibbing To Your Spouse About Canoe Stuff

I usually throw a few small white lies out there, knowing they’ll it circle back around and she’ll get more details. Maybe not always all of them. I haven’t really had to say much in regards to canoeing related items, but bike and snowboard, yes, all of the time.. 😑 We have joint and separate...

    Why Are You Here?

I’m constantly, and endlessly thinking about canoeing. The stories from everyone on here. The maintenance and diy tasks. The jokes and kindness from everyone. You can tell it’s a community on here, from the oldest members to the newest members. From the most skilled to the brand new guy or girl...

    Ranting

We do accumulate stuff. It happens, especially as hobbies or life changes. I don’t know how many people I could give skis and snowboards to. How many wood working projects I could start. A lot of us basically have a gear store in our homes, and the inventory hasn’t stopped rolling in. My buddy...

    Wolves

I was going to say that almost every time I’ve been in the Porkies, a wolf would howl and quiet the coyotes down. Never seen one there, only seen tracks and heard them. Same with paddling Pukaskwa or LSPP

    Explain Your Screen Name

Real name is Eric, but I shortened it to Erk for social media purposes. Always been a fan of Viking or old folklores, as well as getting out and exploring. Land or water. I also have some unfortunate red in my beard. 🤷🏻‍♂️

What's in your front hall closet ?

We don’t have a hall closet, so the mudroom has become that sort of thing. Combination mudroom, closet, gear closet. So most camping, paddling, outdoorsy gear is in there.

    Why Buy A New Canoe?

I purchased two used canoes in pretty good shape within the last few years. One Kevlar, two years old at purchase. And one fiberglass, roughly 34 years old at purchase, garage kept and never used for most. Both canoes were priced great, and both needed some minor work. Seat/thwart/yoke repair...

    Thermal underwear recommendations?

I forgot to mention I use Smartwool, Ridge merino, and Arc’teryx base layers. I have also used the brand from Target, they have a “low-med-high” warmth rating. It works and it’s inexpensive.

    Thermal underwear recommendations?

The closer to your skin the more your piece will perform for you. Keeping you warmer, dryer, less clammy, and less stinky. Ultimately, merino from a number of brands will be the better option for most. There are differences in the types of merino, but all merino is still softer than the...

    Aurora Borealis

when I lived in Alaska they appeared almost every night. Especially cool on my drive into work. I’ve seen them here in Michigan as well, typically in the UP. Never while paddling, hoping to witness them on a paddling trip
