Your first canoeing or canoe trip memories

My first experience is a little hazy, but I can remember paddling around the lake we lived on a lot as a kid. I’d usually take it over to my friends homes on the other end of the lake instead of biking around. Which was never a faster route because I’d always end up fishing along the way and be...

    Photo of the day

It’s a pretty neat area indeed and also one of my favorites. I was actually looking at circumnavigating PPI on a map after our trip to Killarney. The shoreline looks pretty amazing.

    Photo of the day

The gps forecast was inaccurate to what the weather was going to do. We left camp to check out another lake we haven’t been on before and then the clouds thickened and got darker. Then thunder came, so we pulled onto shore at the first spot that looked safe. Lightning struck on the other side of...

    Things you've lost or misplaced on a canoe trip . . .

Left a wooden fish net on some portage in LSPP, realized it was gone while loading the car to go home. Wife’s hat blew off and we watched her new sunglasses sink into the black depths of Killarney Lake. bug spray, black flies are the worst!

    Dreaded Cancer, Mark III

Keeled Over, I commend you for your positive outlook with your diagnosis. I think it can be hard, or challenging at times to keep a level head with such news while talking about what’s going on. I may not have the same thing but I was recently (3 weeks ago) diagnosed with MDS, a potential pre...

Shirts for canoeing and canoe camping

Merino short sleeves, usually one or two. No pockets, just clean and simple. A lightweight, vented long sleeve button up for sun protection and fast drying. Brands vary. Usually bring a lightweight to midweight fleece or a wool blend flannel for cooler nights. Typically don’t bring much clothing...

    Carbon Fiber/Aramid Layup - Why?

I just sold my starlite NW17 and picked up a new blacklite. It’s a touch heavier, but nothing too crazy. I also figure for my previous used outfitter edition, with repair work, I’m probably the same weight or lighter even. Went this route over straight Kevlar because after talking to NS and...

    Aurora Borealis

If you don’t always feel like looking up the forecast, there’s an app you can download called Aurora. I wouldn’t rely on it entirely, but it’ll notify you when they’re going to happen and what the odds are. It also has links and forecast info in the app. Again, I wouldn’t rely too heavily on it...

    Anyone using Astral PFDs?

My wife and I both wear Astral. I have the Sea Wolf, which isn’t made anymore, the green jacket is probably the closest to it. My wife has the Linda, which is real light weight and has good ventilation. The Ceiba is very comfortable and probably my next if not a kokatat. I have no complaints...

    A Question about Folding Saws

Nothing cuts better or easier than a sharp silky saw. Here’s the Katana Boy cutting a 20” Beech and a 13” hard maple. I’ll admit, this wasn’t fun, and pure 4,392 stokes of hell. For both. But, nothing is better than a silky. Just watch your finger tip fat, it’ll get bit

    Flaky epoxy

Ps, thanks to everyone on here who gives all of us tips and insight. Good conversations and laughs. Always appreciated.

    Flaky epoxy

Not a puddle, previous epoxy I couldn’t remove. Well, yes I could’ve, it would have taken hours. It was very thick in some areas, thin in others. The thick parts would only chip off small pieces at a time. I sanded the most I could, but did a little less on those edges being afraid I’d go too...

    Flaky epoxy

After finally finding some free time, I got busy with this hull redo/repair. I chipped, scraped and sanded off As Much as I possibly could. I’d spend a little time here n there after work or while grilling some food and remove what I could. I read through this post, other posts and what...

Show pictures of your tent(s) on a canoe trip

outstanding weather, full lake to ourselves, abundant wildlife, sunburns, lost lures/fishing net and spectacular views. The map showed 7-8 sites, but we only found two. Our site claimed #1 of 3, so maybe the rest are overgrown or non existent. Seemed to be that way for a few lakes here

    Flaky epoxy

I reached out to NS and they, as always, had some good information for me. They also mentioned that it does not look like the same stuff (vinylester) that they use. So this morning, I ordered the correct vinylester from North Star. Today and a few hours last weekend, I started to prep it for...

    303 Preservative on Composite Canoes

I use 303 on the cuffs to help them from drying out and needing to be replaced. Pretty much what you said, but I don’t use it on the cuffs for any UV protection. Something someone showed me a while back, and I’ve maintained the habit.

    303 Preservative on Composite Canoes

I think that it does add UV protection, but maybe not as much as they claim. I do, however, think that the oils penetrate really well into roto boats or the gaskets on dry wear. I’m sure there’s alternatives, but the gaskets are where I really see 303 it work

Mad River Canoe - Been Nice to Know You

The hesitation comes from a lot of things happening at once for us. Major vehicle repair has put us down to one vehicle. And our camp van needs new fuel lines, so my wife is hesitant to spend the money on this when we could be doing some vehicle work. Valid reasoning. I think she’ll come...

Mad River Canoe - Been Nice to Know You

Almost a new owner of a used, but we’ll kept 1999 red Explorer in royalex. Almost because I haven’t quite convinced my wife that we actually do need this. If we don’t get it, the seller is posting it for double the price.
