    Winter pants

I don’t know if anybody has an Eddie Baurer warehouse store near them but there’s usually good deals there. More than just the EB brand. There was one near me in Columbus that on saturdays would have a garage sale room and I’ve seen La Sportiva boots at 75%, Suunto Core watch for $50, Avalanche...

Is Social Media Undermining and Distorting Actual Wilderness Experiences?

An influencer is someone who has the power to affect the purchasing decisions of others because of his or her authority, knowledge, position, or relationship with his or her audience. Influencers are usually active on social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, X, TikTok, and Instagram...

Is Social Media Undermining and Distorting Actual Wilderness Experiences?

The influencers like Bairds, Canoe the North, Lost Lakes, Ben Beauchamp, Tumblehome, etc appeal to us because it’s something we’re all passionate about. Some of them are more skilled than others, some we see grow their paddling skills, some disclose the area and most of them all have something...

Is Social Media Undermining and Distorting Actual Wilderness Experiences?

I read this article a couple of months ago and couldn’t find it until this morning. I have a lot of opinions on this topic and I’ve changed my post twice now. Everything seems to be made for views and less about the passion. I think a lot of these influencers ARE passionate, but the followers or...

Kayak vs Canoe - Your Personal Pros and Cons

I think there’s a misconception of a composite kayaks being lighter, when they’re not that much different than a rotomolded kayak. Both of mine are probably close to 60lbs, fiberglass. Compared to canoes, plastics are heavy while composites are half the weight. Kayaks have so much more going on...

    Paddling jacket needs a home

It’s not the greatest jacket, and it’s small, but I’d like to see someone find it useful

    Paddling jacket needs a home

I have a brand new NRS Rio hooded jacket, tags still on it, size small. Never worn, hardly touched. I got this a while ago thinking it would be good for my wife, but she’s not a cold water person. I wanted to post here first, before CL or marketplace. It’s not the newest technology and I think...

Looking back on 2024 and what’s ahead for 2025

@snapper Thank You! My healing is off to a good start for 2025! I’ll have to live 2020 Covid and germaphobe rules for a bit but that’s not all that bad. I’ll survive

Looking back on 2024 and what’s ahead for 2025

This past year I got out for two overnight trips, one week long and the other 3 nights. I’m lucky to live so close to a few big and small bodies of water, so I usually will get out before work or on days off. So several times a month I got a phone call early last year from my oncologist with...

Show us pictures of your canoe vehicle with boat(s)

I’ve looked at these before, and the Thule version, which had a higher weight capacity. I originally wanted to put a small deck up there but I’m going against that now. I’ll search around eBay, thank you for the recommendation. What year van and did you do anything to the inside? Growing up...

    Winter pants

To those getting friction with base layers and their outer pant. Have you tried a grid fleece with a smooth face, or is that included in the trials? I avoid polyester base layers since I always feel clammy, year round. But plenty of people like them, could be worth a try?

    Winter pants

Soft shell pants, usually a slightly heavier pair but still has stretch. Medium to heavy weight merino bottoms underneath paired with ski socks (over the calf). I’ve been fine in below freezing temps with that setup. If it’s real cold and I’m just sitting around, I’ve been eyeing some down pants

Kayak vs Canoe - Your Personal Pros and Cons

I’ve sold sea kayaks to a couple of people who flipped the same or next day. Returned them because they flipped, it scared them. We never took the paddle back, only the boat as long as it was sellable. There’s no margin on kayaks or canoes so we’d always lose out on having to sell it cheaper. A...

Kayak vs Canoe - Your Personal Pros and Cons

As the owner of both, I agree with some of that. If they’re paddling a chain of lakes or going where most canoeists go, yes! Absolutely more work. Packing and unpacking can also be a little more of a challenge as smaller dry bags get wedged in the far tips or between the skeg box. But with rec...

What height boots do you prefer?

Snapper, how do you like your mukluks? There’s a few people who wear them around the town I live in and I’ve always wanted a pair.

What height boots do you prefer?

I’ll grab either my Salewa Rapace, which have a solid base and pliable around the ankle. Or I’ll go with, but less likely, Scarpa Kinesis Pro. Similar foundation, but leather upper and more rigid. Winter boots were Just replaced after about 15 years of having Sorels to North Face Chillkats with...
