    Best & worst campsites ever?

My best was on the Elk River NWT. Esker hiking, beautiful beaches, amazing fishing. Totally with wjmc, eskers near the tree line is where it’s at. The worst ones I’ve scrubbed from my memory.

What's your morning routine on canoe trips?

I like to get up and go when I’m on my own. I prep my get away the evening before, taking down tarps and clotheslines if weather allows and organize all other gear. In the morning the inside tent stuff gets packed and put into a sealine as soon as I get up . Then, get out of the tent and get...

    Weatherproof Gear Boxes and Cases

I have an aversion to blue barrels and finally bit the bullet and picked up a 30l Yeti pack out and retrofitted an old harness for it, Being flat it feels way better on the back than a blue back breaker and it definitely is a better use of space than the barrel in the boat and it doesn’t roll...

Video: Kiwi canoeing across Canada rescues mud trapped dog

Thanks for the feel good story! Great way to start the day. That’s no way for an old dog to go. I’m surprised by his choice of canoe, Esquif prospecteur? Guess he’s in no hurry.

    Explain Your Screen Name

From the www - Rubbaboo is a common stew or porridgeconsumed by coureurs des bois and voyageurs(French fur traders) and Métis people[1] of North America. This dish is traditionally made of peas and/or corn, with grease (bear or pork) and a thickening agent (bread or flour) that makes up the base...

    Things you've lost or misplaced on a canoe trip . . .

More belt knives than I can remember. Usually they go missing about day 2 of a 3 week trip. I’ve started using Mora knives, their lower price kinda eases the pain and have a back up pocket knife waiting in the repair kit. In every day life I’m not the most organized, but out in the bush I’m a...

New purchases that have been great, even game changers

The round food barrel organizers from Rec Barrel Works make using food barrels much more tolerable. A GPS/ Satellite communicator is pretty handy too.

    Your emergency canoe repair kit?

On an overnight trip, not much, duct tape. On a remote trip the kit is extensive. West Systems makes a repair kit with epoxy and cloth that’s pretty handy, wire, small hand drill and bits, zip ties , small screws and driver, seat drop bolts, multi tool, blue skin patches (cut to fit the...

    Plus size canoeing?

The Clipper Caribou S is probably worth a look too for the same reasons Bill likes his Tranquility. It could be easily sourced in Winnipeg.

Tarp type and set-up style, and let's see some pix

We usually set up with a ridge line when there’s lots of trees to tie off too, most times with the boat to add some structure and cut the winds. When we can’t do the ridge line, a paddle gets jammed under it to take up the slack. My guys love sleeping out by the fire!

    River temps in the sub-arctic.

Sight fishing for lake trout is not uncommon ..

One thing I will never do again is . . .

Drink straight from a water source. It’s not worth the paranoia.

Recommended Fishing Tackle for Upper Thelon in Barren Lands

I’d take a collapsible medium weight rod with 10lbs braid for the grayling and as a backup, and a good heavier 2pc medium weight for the big stuff with 20 lbs braid. I don’t think you need medium/heavy rod in the upper section of the Thelon. The BIG fish come when you get the lakes at the end...

    Churchill River Canoe Outfitters Sold

They’re not going to let you use your own vehicle anymore for shuttles. Gonna cost more for that service. Sucks.

Odd, funny, scary or beautiful things seen on a portage

Scariest: On a port in Algonquin somewhere between NorthTea and the Nipissing, we found a fresh flowing spring. It was hot and I decided to take a nice long drink by kneeling down and slurping it straight from a small pool. It was delicious and cold. When I was finished, I tilted my head...

Cliff Jacobson: NO to skid plates!

I’m considering putting these EZ Keel skids on a couple of flat waterboats. https://www.keeleazy.com/ They look like a good alternative for someone sitting on the skid plate fence.

Nova Craft's New Prospector 14' Solo Canoe, FAQ and Video

Going by the numbers and layups the NC looks like a better river running boat. I’d like to test the 14’ NC against the 15’ NC to see how much faster it is.

Finds, Relics, and Evidence from The Past

The shoreline of the Hayes River at York Factory is full of artifacts. The rapidly eroding bank has claimed many of the buildings and the HBC rebuilt its main building 3 times at this spot. Every time the tide goes out new stuff washes up, grape shot, nails, pipes, coins are everywhere. Parks...
