    AI and on-line posers

My favorite brand is Pelican. I like to paddle in the local reservoir.

    AI and on-line posers

What are the three questions I must answer to prove I'm a real human who loves canoes?

    AI and on-line posers

Baseball reporting and fiance has been AI generated for many years. Apparently because statistics for each made it easier to adapt than other subjects https://www.theverge.com/2016/7/4/12092768/ap-robot-journalists-automated-insights-minor-league-baseball What surprises me is the AI I'm...

Shirts for canoeing and canoe camping

Summer - just a life jacket if I'm on a river where I can keep out of the sun. Otherwise a long sleeve "rashy", AKA polyester, for sun protection. The rest of the seasons my first choice is a silk base layer. But silk is expensive, and a decent polyester/raylon/etc is nearly as good. After...

How is your winter so far?

Pretty mild here in central North Carolina. Nothing has froze for more than a few hours. I paddled comfortably a few weeks ago when the rivers came up. I forded the Eno River last week, wearing running shoes. I was surprised it wasn't colder. The big concern is the lack of rain so far.

    Gators and kids

No, chipmunks are not on the endangered species list. There are species in the southwest that might qualify, but the Eastern Chipmunk is doing fine. I've noticed more gators in populated areas of SC than during my days living there in the late 1990's. My impression is they are on average...

Stuff you don't need or hardly ever use, but you bring anyway

I bring the first aid kit and try hard not to use it.

    My Perfect Solo River Canoe

"not sure if the expedition Kevlar would hold" I have a carbon Kevlar Bell solo, and I'm surprised how well it's held up to logs and rocks. I have a expedition layup kevlar-foam tripping canoe and much prefer the extra stiffness of the carbon lay up. Swift has a finish with gel coat on the...

    My Perfect Solo River Canoe

"shallow fast water" I think you're on the right track with a prospector. The Trillium is a 14.5 foot solo. Compared to a 15 ft prospector it's going to draw more water, maybe an entire inch. I think you're right with the bench seat too. That will allow you to shift your weight enough to...

Winter time, boredom and the used canoe market

If all you do is paddle rivers, and you don't paddle very far, then Royalex might be the way to go. The Tripper would be a good choice, especially if it is the 16 ft. If that's what's available I'd take it. The Explorer would be a great choice if it wasn't so far away. If you fondly remember...

    Buffalo

It is unfortunate the OP didn't want to talk about canoe tripping. The Indus River valley contains most of Pakistan's population. It has a rich history and has been irrigated for millennia. It's also historical habitat for water buffalo.

    Buffalo

The following is quoted from a spam thread. Pulling it out so Glenn can delete the spam thread. I'm curious, where can you paddle and see bison/buffalo?

    DIY Wool Blanket Camp Sweater

When I was a young man in the early '90s polyester and other synthetics were not dirt cheap like now. I took a second hand wool blanket and made long underwear with it. Of course I had to wear cotton underneath the wool. It was so warm it was almost useless in the mid-Atlantic states.

The only 3 knots you need for canoe camping

I'm going with my principal of being conservative about safety stuff. I was taught to use a figure 8 for creating critical loops, like for roping a climber into a harness or end of a throw rope. It creates little stress and is easy to untie. I don't like the farrimond either because it is a...

The best solo canoe may be a touring kayak.

You know the best thing for open water and places with big fetch? A sailboat. Seriously, I'd rather have a small sailboat than a touring kayak. The only real disadvantage to the sailboat is the paperwork and trailer.

The best solo canoe may be a touring kayak.

The real problem is that kayaks aren't that much better in bad conditions, especially for normal people. To make the kayak safer in open water requires a skilled paddler and proper outfitting. I can't imagine many people can roll a 17 ft kayak with 75 lbs of gear. Especially in conditions...

    Canoe cover for travel?

I have a blackgold Bell solo. The finish is robust and only has scratches from truly ugly incidents. I cover it when it gets home to protect it while sliding it under the house or while leaving it in the garage. I don't use the cover on the way to the river. The biggest risk the cover...

What Do You Do In Winter ?

I've been raking leaves. The motion is not dissimilar from paddling. Maybe I need to put a T-grip on the end of one of the rakes. Here in North Carolina the local rivers are mainly up in the winter, in the paddling season never really ends.

    Litter, garbage and trash

When I lived in West Virginia in the late '90s I paddled some of the rivers in the southern coal fields. This is basically the area south of Charleston and the west of interstate 77. Every put in was littered with all kinds of garbage, mattresses, appliances often including rotten deer...
