    Leaving firewood at camp

This seems pretty straight forward. If there is an established campsite leave the wood. Especially in heavily used campsites, because otherwise people will pillage anything that burns for firewood. In wild areas use your best judgement. Of course I always appreciate when folks leave wood for me.

Looking for canoe for solo flat water fishing

Yeah, lots of folks are happy fishing from solo canoes, especially the wider ones. I guess my perspective is that if it's as wide as a tandem I'd rather just have the tandem. The Explorer draws about an inch less than my Yellowstone, which is especially nice in shallow rivers or silted...

Looking for canoe for solo flat water fishing

My perfect fishing solo would be this, a (allegedly) 15 ft Mad River Explorer. https://greensboro.craigslist.org/spo/d/burlington-15-foot-mad-river-royalex/7784277946.html To me a solo canoe is narrow enough to paddle across easily. But canoes this narrow tend to be too tippy to relax in...

    Hurricanes

Here in the piedmont it has been really dry the last few weeks. We need the rain these storms bring. Obviously would prefer smaller storms rather than hurricanes.

    Snake infested water bodies

I've paddled in the Carolinas for decades. I don't worry about snakes much. I worry about people, drowning, and gators. This is an excellent site for snake identification. https://herpsofnc.org/snakes/ The northern water snake is ubiquitous in the waters of the Carolinas It is frequently...

    Bamboo Pole?

I have no doubt an aluminum pole would be perfect However, I have no desire to use one. For now I pole just for relaxation and really like my wood pole. I see bamboo along the river occasionally and thought it might be interesting to have the additional texture of the bamboo pole.

    Bamboo Pole?

"Glenn, Alan, what is the best way to change this to a thread about bamboo poles?" - I was able to change the thread title to reflect the more correct usage of "bamboo" rather than "cane"

    Bamboo Pole?

Has anyone used a bamboo/cane for poling? Seems like the feel and flex might be different than a wood pole.

Show us pictures of your canoe dogs

Uba helped hold down the front of my canoe for about 10 years. She loved the water and retrieving things. In this picture she doesn't care that it's cold. She doesn't care that it's raining. She wants to know why we haven't seen her favorite bird, a cormorant.

Video: Paddler and boat trapped in low head dam

Fail 1: attempted to run a low head dam Fail 2: not setting safety at the bottom of the dam Fail 3: Dude completely missed his boof. If he even tried it was comically late. Fail 4: Crew hoops and hollers before assessing swimmer. He doesn't look good. We have tragedies here every year. A few...

    What are we doing wrong?

Hey Earl, Welcome to the site. There is lots of good advice here, probably more that I can follow. You aren't doing anything wrong, it just takes time. My main advice to new (and experienced) paddlers is to practice self-rescue. Even if it is just finding a pool or clean lake, practice...

    Best & worst campsites ever?

In college four of us paddled up to Moondance falls on Lake Jocassee. We thought we'd camp there. We arrived around sunset and discovered there was simply nowhere to pitch a tent. It's just too steep. We each laid out as best we could on rainforest floor, on the hillside, a tree at our back...

The Clipper he is paddling was manufactured in British Columbia. Don't know if it's in his district or not.

Replacement Vinyl/Aluminum Gunwales available retail in Maine?

Your timeline certainly makes this difficult. As Robin says, gunwales can be made from hardware store wood. If you have a table saw ripping the edges from two deck boards will yield four perfectly usable gunwales. I suggest securing them with deck screws since the treated lumber is...

What older minivan would you recommend?

    Which Subaru?

If I was looking for a reliable shuttle vehicle the Toyota Venza gets AWD and reliability as cheaply as possible. Like this one in Hartford. https://hartford.craigslist.org/ctd/d/manchester-2015-toyota-venza-awd-all/7769935296.html Of course an Outback in that price range is also a great choice.

    Which Subaru?

Cheap and reliable are not easy. I fear that compared to a van most SUV will not be comfortable to move around in like you're used to. This vehicle is not new, efficient, or reliable. But it's gorgeous and comes with a canoe and trailer...

Tripping Sights and Sounds You Miss

    Which Subaru?

I think 8 seconds is fine for a van. I mention the Sienna because he's down sizing from a full size van, and the Sienna is the most compelling minivan available. If he doesn't need SUV ground clearance then a minivan is a great place to change after a paddle. Way better than a Highlander...

    Which Subaru?

I've ridden in a Subaru Ascent. It is almost a minivan. It looks like the seats fold flat easily. If you're not doing aggressive off-roading it would be a great choice. I'm really impressed Toyota's current four-cylinder hybrids. The Toyota Sienna is bigger than the Ascent, but gets 10...
