Poll: How Many Canoes and Kayaks Have you Owned?

Yeah, first question is what counts as owning? What counts as a paddle craft? I think that means to many.

Poll: How Many Canoes and Kayaks Have you Owned?

Who's counting? I'll tell you when I've had enough canoes!

    Seasonal withdrawal

Yeah, I miss the sunshine. I've been thinking it would be good to do something outside the week of the solstice. It would have to be within driving distance to North Carolina. But I don't want to go so far south there are a bunch of gators.

The History of the Curtis Dragonfly and Shouldered Tumblehome

I think canoes are a mature design. My impression is things have changed very little since wood canvas canoes. As much as I love shoulder tumblehome I'm not sure it is really much different than tumblehome. There have been innovations to paddlecraft. Like white water play boats that can be...

Bio of John Berry, his risqué humor, and "The Hooker"

The cartoon has really strong William Nealy vibes. Must have have been a late eighties thing.

One All-Around Canoe for Maine Tripping

Northstar's IXP and Nova Crafts Tuff Stuff are supposed to be as robust as T-formex but lighter and stiffer. If I was after a new do-it-all canoe I'd probably look at their boats. I really favor stiffer hulls whenever practical, they just paddle better. I'd like to hear more from people who...

108km in five Days on german lakes

I'm impressed with the outfitting, including floatation. The sailing canoe looks sharp too.

New world record - paddlin’ down the Missouri in a pumpkin!

I would take the pumpkin over some canoes and many kayaks. Not only is it more interesting, but I wouldn't have to feel guilty about leaving it in the river if it was damaged. The shape seems much more appropriate for a play boat. I'm not sure what tricks you could do. Seems like it might be...

Booze Provokes Unfit Man to Paddle Entire Yukon River

"Freedom is another word for nothing left to lose" What a great story. It's good to know if everything else falls apart I can go paddling. I think an old Grumman would be fine for this trip, although chewing gum isn't the ideal patch during a long voyage. I read "Kings of the Yukon" last...

    Mourning Drowned Rivers

William Nealy's Whitewater Home Companion, Southern Rivers volume 1, has maps of the lower Haw River prior to Jordan Lake filling. There are comments about the lake and how Nealy regarded it. Of course he wasn't impressed. However, Jordan Lake has done a lot to prevent flooding downstream...

    Mourning Drowned Rivers

The opening sequence of Deliverance shows the construction of the dam that forms Lake Jocassee. The book and movie took their inspiration from the destruction of South Eastern rivers. The dam inundated parts of the Keowee River, Toxaway River, Whitewater River, Thompson River, and Horse...

here's one NOT on my bucket list

His videos make ridiculously difficult stuff look easy. There are a few shorts on YouTube that are really amazing. He does a double flip on a huge wave, I think it's on the Zambezi. I don't know how you can get enough force to rotate a kayak twice.

Ever have a downriver wind push you up river?

Could it be the wind shifted the current? Maybe creating an upstream flow on one side? Basically an eddy? Whatever the reason, I believe you. I've seen wind and water do things that don't make sense.

Widow's Canoe Camping Auction, Ends Tonight

Prices came up some by the end. None were just silly. The Quantico was in pretty good shape. 1200 certainly seems below market value, but it's hard to tell the value of used canoes.

Widow's Canoe Camping Auction, Ends Tonight

It makes me sad to see that Yellowstone solo is priced really low. Anxious to see if some late bids come in. In my opinion that's one of the best river canoes you could have.

Canoe / bus crash in Bangor, Maine

Instead of running shuttle they should have been running from the shuttle.

How do you manage your camera while canoeing?

I've been using this ammo can since the early nineties. It is heavy, but it doesn't leak. It works well because it can be opened one handed. I use it for a DSLR, but I take that less as it doesn't wireless sharing capabilities. On exercise trips and most day trips I just take my phone, which...

Poll: Survey of Portage Pack Bracket Solution for Carrying Canoes on Hiking Pack

That knu-pac is very interesting. I'm all for transferring the load off the shoulders and onto the hips. This is a perfect school engineering project. I wouldn't bother in real life because 1/2 of us canoeists are cheap and will copy it ourselves. And another 1/4 love Duluth packs and don't...

    Animal Behavior

It's fun watching ducks in white water. The problem is they can fly away just before they get washed into a hole. Seems like cheating.
