    Our new Atuk tent!

Thanks for the SPF tips, everybody. I have a decent handle on the pines but gosh these balsam/hemlocks are tricky. snapper thanks! Definitely need to work on the footwear situation. Blown winter camping budget. Boots before new sleeping system for sure, though. I thought the heavy ancient...

    Compression Dry Bag

Sea to Summit makes good ones. They have a one-way air vent thinger that squishes air out but doesn't let any water in. I have an OR one too but I pulled on the compression strap too hard and the stitching is giving away already (it's only a year old).

    Our new Atuk tent!

Thanks sweeper, BV. I used the needle-rolling test and then smelled it and to me it smelled like a balsam, but I've never smelled a hemlock and maybe they smell similar? Hahahaha. I always thought hemlocks had bigger branches that swoop down and were kind of a darker colour. Or at least that's...

    Our new Atuk tent!

Ahh! But it was a puny tree! I had no mature bark to go by! The needles were very similar to fir. I just learned about the "roll" test. Will edit blog of this grave error. I have that book but I never seem to carry it with me when I'm in the forest. Perhaps I should start. memaquay : it worked...

    Our new Atuk tent!

lowangle al I have part one of the build up on my blog and I'll post the second instalment soon. The only thing we have left to do is figure out our lashing system. Most of the rigging is finished except for the top bungee tie-down stuff.

    Our new Atuk tent!

No skis! We have snowshoes but since we were at the campground we only needed them to pack down our tent area. Soon I hope to get out with our new home-built freight toboggans.

    Our new Atuk tent!

Thanks sweeper! If that's a hemlock it's a good thing I didn't eat it. Maybe I'll stick to calling everything "SPF" haha

    Our new Atuk tent!

Yayyyy, finally! We took our new canvas hot tent out this past weekend to Algonquin Provincial Park. It was rather chilly but we survived with fingers and toes intact. Here's the report! https://canoecrew.wordpress.com/2016/02/20/forty-below-zero/

    Xmas Gear.

I got all kinds of goodies! So spoiled. Andrew gave me Woolpower long johns and a trangia stove with a kettle which is soooo cute. I also got a new camp kitchen kit, a survival guide book, a book about the mapping and history of Lake Superior, a Temagami toque, and a bit of money to put towards...

    Canadian Tire Money

No Title My dad collected Canadian Tire money, and now I do too. It doesn't make sense to spend it until you've got a really fat wad and can walk in the store flipping bills off the stack and making it rain like you're a baller. Loverboy, Rush.. Ughhhh. Bachman's cool though. And Neil Young...

    Silky Saws

We have the Silky PocketBoy and it works great for light summer maintenance and typical campsite sawing. Love how lightweight it is, but I agree that it's kind of weird to get used to the pull instead of push action. We just upgraded to a folding bucksaw for heavier duty work and winter camping...

Snowed in on Rain Lake, Algonquin PP November 2015

snapper our Mazda has a manual transmission. The main issue we had was that the less than 6 inches of ground clearance couldn't push through the 14 inches of snowfall. We were worried we would rip something off the underbelly of the car.

Come on Baby Light My Fire!

We bring several bic lighters (keep one each in our day packs and throw a few in the food barrel just in case), magnesium stick thing for emergencies, and generally do just fine with a teepee kindling setup and some birchbark. Lately we've been enjoying the ease of InstaFlame starters.. They're...

tump_lion seeing that article makes me REALLY happy that we took all of our gear and our canoe out before leaving our car behind. I like that you call your truck a taco, and o totally agree with you about new ones being too fancy. And small boxes! Now what is the point of a teeny little box...

Snowed in on Rain Lake, Algonquin PP November 2015

Iskweo all of my dream cars are under the hashtag #adventuremobile on Instagram. There are some pretty funny and awesome ones to look at there. I am a fan of any car that can be fixed with a hammer.. In our old Buick, the electric windows failed on the passenger side and our mechanic ripped off...

Snowed in on Rain Lake, Algonquin PP November 2015

Wow, lucky you had someone there that could help you out. Something even more ridiculous: Once we got back to the city, we found the battery in the old Big Brown Chev work truck was dead, too. Two cars to zero in a weekend. I probably should have researched the road better before we drove in...

Snowed in on Rain Lake, Algonquin PP November 2015

Well geez, I guess I will have to get that crazy tank thing I posted above! The ground clearance was the biggest issue. Our car was just dragging and scraping its underbelly along the snow.

Odyssey this isn't the first time we've had the car get stuck in the snow/mud/at the bottom of a hill. It's good for summer trips.. Lots of room for gear, good on gas. Just not so great for winter adventures or any road surface other than dirt or tarmac. I think we need this...
