What is your most DISLIKED tree and why?

Our first home had a tin roof and between acorns and crab apples it could get pretty exciting. Ever had one of those acorns land on your HEAD? It hurts as much as you think it would! I’m not particularly a fan of the Bradford Pear, they do seem to need a lot of maintenance work and they’re...

Wenonah Solo Plus with big patches of gel coat missing.

I would turn that boat down for free, and would be loath to spend the gas to go look at it. This coming from a Florida guy who ordered a Northstar from a dealer in Michigan, and made the retrieval trip at the drop of a hat!

What is your most DISLIKED tree and why?

Following on Glenn’s favorite trees post, I figured we need to balance the discussion. My most disliked, outright hated tree is the water oak. They get big, prolifically dropping leaves and debris all their existence, rot from the inside out, and invariably fall in your house or vehicle. Sweet...

Greetings, and a Bell layup question.

Looks fantastic! And at least 12-lbs lighter than an IXP Phoenix.

    New seat design.

Looks like one could use that with a chamber pot.

What is your favorite tree and why?

Right! Can you imagine the forests that yielded the original roof beams for Notre Dame cathedral? They were one piece! After the fire the replacement beams had to be made from more than one / several pieces.

    New seat design.

I think he’s on the right track- bowing the sides up lifts the woven suspension somewhat above the front and rear edges so your weight is borne by the suspension and not the frame. I’m very interested to see how that works, and then my next thought is- make the suspension full width for wider...

Hemlock Canoe Works sold and will remain in Hemlock, NY

So glad some hedge fund didn’t buy Hemlock.

What is your favorite tree and why?

Favorite? No… too many to like for various reasons. I love the bald cypress, junipers and live oaks, and a variety of native and exotic cherries. Some of the local crepe myrtles if left un-murdered are spectacular. Japanese magnolias are glorious too.

Blue Steel Layup Inspection / Repair Advice

Agreed, it doesn’t look as devastating as I feared. Is it just the one busted rib? Two breaks? Or two ribs/1break @? I’d think they will need patches. Maybe drill a hole in the breaks big enough for a syringe tip to inject epoxy.

Blue Steel Layup Inspection / Repair Advice

I had this same phenomenon with bicycles! The beaters get the most play, while the queens stay at home.

Blue Steel Layup Inspection / Repair Advice

I started to feel queazy when I read “The tag end…” When it comes to straps & tie downs, I like them as short as possible after making them secure. This is why I don’t use my 25’ bow and stern lines as tie downs, and I trimmed the excess off my cam straps when I had my largest boat loaded...

    Looking for a paddle

You could also get one of those adjustable length paddles from west marine to figure out the length you want. Then you’ve got a crappy loaner/oyster bar pusher to save your good paddles.

Music for the drive to, during, or the drive back from canoe trips?

I like a very wide range of music, but I also wouldn’t take a music player with me. I’d take an ukulele or small guitar though.

    Looking for a paddle

It’s not a bad idea to have a push pole with you too. A length of seasoned bamboo, or hardware store dowel. Or get a Carlisle beater paddle to abuse or loan (but I repeat myself).

    Looking for a paddle

Re: the Bending Branches Arrow, pictures show a non-symmetrical grip on a straight shaft paddle, which may feel awkward if you enjoy underwater recoveries that involve spinning the grip in your palm each stroke. The Explorer Plus is a similar shape with some more edge protection and a...

    Looking for a paddle

Are you going to be paddling seated, kneeling, or both? Are you sit ‘n switch or are you interested in paddling on one side using correction strokes?Different strokes and all that… I personally try to be capable with it all, but I am much more comfortable seated than kneeling for any length of...
