    Tilley Hats

I have a very lightly used (as in worn less that 6 times) Tilly Wanderer in khaki, size 7 3/8, made in Canada that I’m willing to part with. I puchased it about a year and a half ago. It’s too small for me, and I almost immediately purchased a size 7 5/8, which is a much better fit. Given that...

    Allagash question

Yes. The ranger will take your gear for $10. I don’t know the fee for taking you and your canoe but I’ll bet it’s pretty reasonable.

Grade A boat or a second?

Thanks everyone for weighing in. The maker has agreed to replace the boat at their expense. I believe the consensus here helped. Some have private messaged me to speculate about the identity of the canoe company. I am declining to confirm. The fact is I very much like the one boat I already own...

Grade A boat or a second?

The boat I’m referencing cost $4,000 plus. I assume that meets your definition of a top tear maker.

Grade A boat or a second?

I received a new canoe this weekend that I had ordered some time ago. Upon inspection, I found a patch, about 2” x 3”, in the chine of the boat and a corresponding dull area in the gel coat in the same location but on the outside of the boat. I wrote the maker and here is part of the reply that...

    Downeast Lakes

I bring a full length yoga mat, folded in half, as a kneeling pad and use it for a variety of other purpose including as a landing mat. I also lay it down as a ground cloth of sorts below my hammock and slept on it for eight nights in my Eureka bug shelter when my hammock suspension failed on my...

    Best varnish for ash paddle

It seems that I’ve heard several times from manufacturers and others than ash paddles don’t take oil well. Perhaps I’ll varnish the blade and oil the shaft and handle for now, knowing I can always varnish over the oil down the road.

    Best varnish for ash paddle

I need to refinish an ash paddle made by Dale Toby of Grand Lake Stream. I’m looking for opinions on what is the most appropriate — not necessarily the cheapest — varnish to use. Thoughts?

Wood Canvas Canoes/Steve Lapey/White Rose Canoe

I emailed with Steve just a few weeks ago and he told me he was no longer making or restoring canoes. I have two Chestnuts that he restored, a Prospector and a PAL. He is an excellent craftsman and these canoes are simply beautiful. And he’s a nice guy. Visited his tiny shop — a shed really —...

    Downeast Lakes

That’s a 1965 16 foot Chestnut Prospector. Steve Lapay did the restoration. Such a sweet paddle.

    Where Are All The Canoes?

Where are all the canoes? I showed my wife this thread and she said, somewhat disapprovingly, “They’re all under the car port.”

Actually, I ended up using this boat for several river trips. I’ve now decided to keep it. My apologies for not coming back here to note that.

    Downeast Lakes

Just back from five days touring the Downeast Lakes region. I think of this area as Maine’s mini Boundary Waters. At least 15 lakes can be reached by paddling or short portage — and 20 or more if you are up to longer portages. Yes, there are cottages but, with the exception of bottle lake, the...

    Keewaydin duffel bag

How would you tie a tump to a duffel? I’ve seen pictures of two duffles stacked and tied together with the tump but couldn’t make out how it tied.
