A Cold Cracking of Royalex Question

I've seen one canoe with aluminum rails crack when stored outside but covered by a half-shed. But the weather was far harsher than what you're going to see.

Jim Henry is back and just designed a canoe for Adirondack Canoe Co.

When I first saw this thread and read the article, I was a little disappointed that this wasn't about a composite resurrection of the Guide or Freedom Solo. But now that I looked at the ACC website, I see that they kind of have that niche covered already.

I don't think I knew that either. That's quite an accomplishment, being that successful on the first try. There are newer designs I'd prefer now, but not so much that I'd bother to replace my Malecite.

    Float bags

Oh yeah - the saddle... I could have saved some weight by making the kneepads smaller and leaving off the saddle's "wings". But I like to be able to move around and change my position some. The wings make it just wide enough to sit with my feet forward without interfering with kneeling. I did my...

Weather 1/25: Cold, Cold, Cold, Wind, Wind, Wind, Wind

The skin wax Altai sells should work on any synthetic climbing skins, I would think. I have also used a Nickwax waterproofing treatment for skins that is a liquid in a bottle with sponge applicator. I can't say I know which works best, but I haven't experienced either not working. The Altai wax...

Where'd I leave off? Oh.... Tying the buckles on with cord was a Q&D move that overstayed its welcome. This looks a little cleaner. Loops algned with D-rings give some redundancy. I'll be leaving extra length on the cage cordage. I've found that having the ability to allow bags to be...

Weather 1/25: Cold, Cold, Cold, Wind, Wind, Wind, Wind

A few weeks ago, I was out in about 32°f with wet snow falling and ice was building up on the skins and the bindings - robbing all the glide, of course. I scraped the ice off of the skins and applied the wax, and was good for the rest of the day. Doesn't take much, and I think it works best if...

I know about skiing with the single 6' pole, but I I'm using different gear entirely when I ski where I think that would be useful. Believe it or not, I have the Koms too, and had them before the Hoks. Switchback bindings on those. They were my first really fat ski, and I like them a lot - but...

Alan, could you tell those are Hoks in my photo? I don't like snowshoeing either. The Hoks are just plain enjoyable to use. I'm such a believer in them for practical snow travel that I've collected all three sizes. The family loves them. I've tried to get them excited about skiing off-trail with...

Boise gets the cold shoulder. :(

My skiing is more exploring than making turns, but I like to get a few turns in for practice. That photo was at the apex of a local ten mile loop. We could use some more snow here.

That's helpful info. I have been considering doing the same.

    Canoe Tents

I had the same thoughts for a trip down the Snake here in SW Idaho. Lots of islands that would be great to camp on, but they're all either private or part of the wildlife preserve. No camping allowed. Given wind issues and the fact that stream flows are variable, sleeping on the water in the...

Solo Composite Canoe that can do it all 😉

Have you tried it though? I never thought I'd like one until I paddled (and then bought) my Solitude. Anyway, I've seen a Prism with bench seat. Is that not still an option?

Winter paddle and poling through ice

Don't remember who said it, but I'll confirm it. Slick slabs are a problem with the grade 8 spikes on my aluminum poles. The bronze shoe isn't any better there. I have another aluminum blank out in the shed, and I think I'll use that to try another idea I've been contemplating. Instead of the...

    Float bags

Starting on the Wildfire now. The stem anchors go in first. Cord goes out through the tugeyes. Question - How come Kaz can drill a clean hole through a Kevlar hull that needs no plastic flange insert to make it presentable, but Bell could not. I should have taken a picture, but those holes in...

:sneaky: I still have lots of ice free water within about 40 minutes, possibly less. I can be skiing the back country in about 2 hours. What to do.... what to do.....

The New Swift/DY Redesign of the Dragonfly

Thank you! Very informative. Dang it. I still need at least three five solo canoes. :D
