    Symmetrical and Asymmetrical

Hey guys, Comparing canoes and curious if I’m missing something on this. Looking at manufacturer’s canoe overhead views, and I’m looking at some canoes listed as symmetrical and others listed as asymmetrical. These are all larger 17.5-18.5’ tripping canoes. Note that I am only considering the...

    Solitude / Wilderness

Thanks @Marten, I’ll get on that researching…appreciate it! @Alan Gage that 43 day sounds amazing! I’m honestly not looking for necessarily a close to home place right now. For that I’m just going to be heading to the local lake and fishing for the day. I’ve been checking out QPP and have some...

    Solitude / Wilderness

That said if the list is so long you don’t even know where to start that sounds promising. :) Would QPP be a good one or should I perhaps focus elsewhere? Never been so not sure on solitude etc., although I know entry is limited.

    Solitude / Wilderness

Thanks Alan, I was leaning Canada for sure, thanks for confirming my suspicions. I have done multiple trips to these types of areas in southern Canada / the northern U.S. and know I like the area, just have not been in a canoe. I’m just saying my location isn’t really relevant to what I’m...

    Solitude / Wilderness

Hey Alan, Anywhere in the northern U.S. or southern-ish Canada really, although probably not anything in salt water. I am more interested in the other factors rather than drive time there. So long as I can drive there. Pure rivers are probably out as I’m looking for that loop or out and back...

    Solitude / Wilderness

Thanks Alan I’ll check out the book. Location wise I’d say I be more interested in northern U.S. or southern-ish Canada. Don’t mind driving but don’t want to have to take a float plane if that makes sense. I would say motor boats going by would probably put a damper on it for me. That could...

    Solitude / Wilderness

Hey guys, What canoe destinations would you put on this list with a wilderness / solitude feel in either the U.S. or southern-ish Canada that can be driven to and paddled as loops or out and backs? I like having the freedom to not have to reserve specific campsites or stay in designated...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

@Steve in Idaho for your typical canoe lake tripping from what I’ve seen the SR Quetico 18.5 is one of the most talked about and suggested for 3 from afar from my research. But if anyone has “paddles in the water” info would be great to hear. I’m set on a solid foam core floor however. Seems...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

@Alan Gage as far as canoes go I think I’m looking more for the crew cab half ton pickup. :) just trying to determine if I want to go aluminum bed, steel, or composite bed and the best axle ratio for mostly highway driving. Anyway…

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

Ahh, thanks @Mason, that makes sense on solo being in the middle and tumblehome helping. As I have the longest reach, on these 3 seaters I’ll probably be in the middle I’d guess. Any reason I couldn’t shift to one side, and put heavier gear on the opposite side in front of me to counterbalance...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

Agreed there Alan regardless again we would be right at 650-700lbs absolute max, more accurately 670lbs, so I’d say 675 is about right on, decreasing as the trip progresses. And without a doubt soaking up all the info I can here and the input on the various design considerations has been...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

Thanks guys and I appreciate the discussion here. Lakes are currently frozen and this is a canoe forum, if I’m overthinking it I’d say this is hopefully the time and place to do so… :) @Jim Dodd curious why you’d say tumblehome is more applicable to solo canoes? My first thought would be the...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

Thanks. I’m leaning new just to get what I’m looking for, I’m not sure how often a used ~18.5, epoxy, foam core, etc. etc. canoe (and I’m not looking for a project) would come up and cost to go get it might not be worth it. I think I’m buy once cry once on this one. :) And you might be right on...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

Not sure I’m completely following you there @Keeled Over … these canoes aren’t cheap, currently have no canoe, and looking to make the best long term investment that I can. Tumblehome is one part of the equation and some of the canoes I’ve been looking at are very close, save things like these...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

Thanks guys - @memaquay as I’m looking for a canoe that will mostly work well for lake tripping multi-day type adventures with 3 people as well as fishing on lakes with 2, I had almost ruled out Prospector models (my understanding is they are more suited for moving water). In regards to moving...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

Thanks for the info. Sounds like a less than ideal scenario for sure. I guess I’m just not sure if tumblehome (built-in from the ground up) would be a pro or a con. From what I’ve read flare is better with waves and stability while tumblehome helps paddling ease / efficiency. But it sounds like...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

Thanks guys, I would agree @Benson Gray that eating the canoe would be a bad idea although I definitely do plan on having everyone in it. I don’t think any of these resins are that great but from the data I’ve seen, based on what I’ve seen in the SDS information etc., and after talking with...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

Thanks, based on previous research it seems epoxy may be the lesser toxic of the two when cured, and everybody seems to think it makes a better canoe as well, so have been leaning that route. Seeing a few out there, some flared, some with traditional tumblehome and then a couple from Swift with...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

Hey guys, I’m in the market for a large (17.5-18.5’ or so) canoe for 3 paddlers and gear. I see one defining feature between manufacturers is tumblehome or flare. Some manufacturers offer tumblehome only on smaller models. I see “shouldered tumblehome” being offered as the best of both worlds...

    Hand Layup or Vacuum

Sounding like aesthetics and possibly being over specs on weight are the main concerns. Aesthetics would probably bother me upon receipt but not after some use. Weight and or durability would be bigger concerns.
