    Pooch's Post

If you are referring to your new Phoenix, I agree....it would be a tight fit........with two full size packs for a 10+ day trip, the only room for the dog would be between your legs or on top of a pack....The boat can handle that kind of weight, but that configuration of a paddler, 2 full size...

Seat Drops (Bolt Covers) -- Why Use 'Em?

I would put the drops in.....Whether you realize it or not, your butt wiggling around on the seat puts a lot of stress on the bolts which could cause them to bend or break(I've seen it before)....that same stress could cause issues with your gunnels.....the bolts wiggling in the holes could...

    Innegra

I have no building experience with it, but North Star utilizes it in their highly touted IXP layup developed for wilderness river tripping: "Substantial Innegra with an inner blanket of Aramid. Innegra has excellent impact absorption, great flex and good abrasion resistance. A full wet vacuum...

What do you think I should do?

I'm glad it worked out to your satisfaction! I'm not surprised though.....Great Miami Outfitters is a top notch shop and they haven't survived as long as they have without taking care of their customers! Mike

    Quiet Water Symposium, Lansing MI.

I made it up! I had a good time. I saw Cliff's 1st presentation of the day and enjoyed it. I was disappointed Kevin Callan had the flu and was a last minute scratch as he was one of the presenters I wanted to see. I spent a couple of hours walking around checking out the exhibitors. Mike

    She's Heeeere!

Can you sneak it into the garage and just pretend it's been there all along? Maybe pile some boxes on it? Congratulations! Mike

    Bald Eagles in Dayton, Ohio

By Mid -February down here, the courtship/nest building is generally complete. Historically, our Eagles are laying eggs on or around February 15th. I received a "blog" e-mail update yesterday indicating that the "Watchers" are monitoring both nests for the sign of eggs. Mike

    Bald Eagles in Dayton, Ohio

My wife and I love the LMR, we only paddled it twice last year though....The first time was late May and we put in at the Jacoby Rd. launch and paddled to Rte 35.....I thought it was very enjoyable, but my wife didn't enjoy scrambling over/under/ around the down trees.....The liveries don't...

Solar charger for my camera question.

As recped said......use the solar panel to charge a USB power bank, then use the bank to charge camera, phone, tablet, whatever......I carried a couple of the small power banks...each was good for a single charge on either my phone or GoPro ......I would then throw the charger back on the solar...

    Quiet Water Symposium, Lansing MI.

Has anyone been to this Symposium before? I am thinking of going this year, it's March 2nd. I have never been before, but have been told that it is very similar (only much smaller) to "Canoecopia" in Madison, Wisconsin. I attended Canoecopia a few years ago and really enjoyed it. A buddy...

    Bald Eagles in Dayton, Ohio

Up until about 10 years ago, Bald Eagles were non-existent in my area. The last documented nesting pair in the Dayton area disappeared about 80 years ago. Three rivers (Great Miami, Mad, and Stillwater) as well as a large Creek (Wolf) merge together in the middle of our city to form the...

    Old Gear Still Using

I think the oldest pieces in my kit date to the early 70's. A stainless steel Sierra cup and a small wooden cribbage board. I still carry both today. I still have my original sterno stove, but haven't carried it in 30 years. Mike

    feels like cheating

We drove home from Florida New Years eve and on the long drive I was constantly monitoring the USGS river gauges for my local river as well as the weather forecast in hopes of making our annual New Years Day float. 2018 was a wash due to the fact that all of the area lakes/rivers were frozen...

    feels like cheating

In answer to Odyssey's question.....Unfortunately I had to spend Christmas in Florida this year to attend a memorial service for a deceased family member. No time for paddling. Did get a couple of walks in on the beach though! Mike

Mad River Gelcoat (gel coat) Repair/Questions

I used permatex 5 minute "gap filler" epoxy and for paint, found a Rustoleum 2X on sale for $2.99 a can that seemed a fairly close color match. The 2X means it was a combo primer/paint and according to the label it adheres to about anything. I got two full coats from 1 can. Hopefully the...

    Gas prices

My F-150 typically only gets driven on the weekends as during the week I drive a work car. The truck has a 36 gallon tank and unless I'm traveling, only gets filled once a month. Gas prices in my area are currently $1.99-$2.01 a gallon and one gas station about 10 miles away was advertising...

Mad River Gelcoat (gel coat) Repair/Questions

If you want to do it the "right way", You can buy kits from places like West systems to repair the gel coat. Seeings as how old your boat is, they may have a hard time matching your color. I believe they have a kit that you can blend the colors yourself to match. It is a very labor...

    Materials for River Trips

Black_Fly, I'm not sure where in SW Ohio you are, but I have a Phoenix in the IXP layup that you are more than welcome to paddle. Also, for what it's worth, Great Miami Outfitters up here in Dayton just recently became a Northstar dealership. I don't believe they currently have any Phoenix...

Dog friendly solo river boats in a post-Royalex world.

I don't know where you are located, but there is a Bell Rockstar in royalex for sale on Craigslist for $950.00 in the Niagara Falls region of New York. I have a Phoenix in the new IXP layup and love it. A little tender initially, particularly if you aren't kneeling, but great secondary...
