    Late season on the Assiniboine

I got out for a nice paddle this week on the Assiniboine River just west of Winnipeg. We put in at the Baie St Paul bridge and came out at the trans canada highway overpass. The original plan was to go past there to Beaudry Park where my truck was. More on that later. I coerced my friend...

    20 foot freighter canoe

You should make some U shaped cradles for it to rest in and you could transport it that way so no need to flip it over. Just sayin. That looks to be one comfy unit.

    Older canoe repair

That is actually a pretty slick idea.

    Older canoe repair

The skid plates look like add ons to me. A very unloved hull that could be brought to life with a little effort.Would look nice with a two tone paint job red/cream like Swift used to do with their boats. Keep us posted, we love pictures. Christy

Everyone takes an axe/hatchet with them, right ?

I have for years taken my old Hultafors forest axe and used it but sparingly. Mostly for cleaning up portage trails...ie.. limbing. I have substituted a machete for that because it is lighter and perfect for clearing brush. For any serious wood cutting my chainsaw is my best friend.

What do you drink on a trip?

Coffee in the mornings. Then water, sometimes tea in the evening or when its cold / rainy. I have been using those liquid mixes like MIO or Koolaid...they seem to have a better taste for when you just cant manage without something to jazz itup a little.

    Making a fishing canoe

We fished for years out of Karins Swift Mattawa with her portable fish finder along every where we went. I was sceptical at first but it was no bother to use. An electric motor would be a great idea.

How Do You Do Your Dishes?

I like to fish and hunt as well so that is part of the diet where possible. Other than that frozen or fresh with dehydrated backup meals in the "Aww crap" reserve. My process is quite simple...I cook like normal. It is much closer regulated though for no leftovers. Once we have our plates...

Canoe Hoist using a Worm Gear

That is rather timely. I was just pondering such a rig the other day. I do like the sling you have.

    Thinking of Mem !

After a couple of weeks in the bush, a can of spam looks mighty appetising. I remember back in the 70's ( not often or very clearly) that we had ration packs with all canned foods inthem. Chicken or spam or sardines...even little cans of pre cooked bacon that were like gold for trading. Much...

    DuctTape's 2019 Quetico Trip

Quetico and Boundary Waters are so close to me and yet I have only driven past them. A fall trip may be just the ticket. I had intended to go to Turtle River near Ignace this year but my companions bailed at the last minute. I have so much great water within a half day or less in Manitoba though...

How to handle the physical and psychological issues of aging?

an off road wheel chair in a handicapped camping spot. Hahaha...that sounds just hard core enough to work. I have my GF talked into a day paddle on the marsh with an overnight on the beach on Lake Manitoba. The marsh and the lake are connected by water. Her kayak and my canoe. We just have to...

    20 foot freighter canoe

" Think maybe we used a little too much dynamite there Butch? " Looks like testosterone got a toehold on this project and just took off. Epic is the only word that is adequate here. Honestly though I wouild have gone with twin 2.5s just to be that little bit over the top. Ya know, it almost...

    Alternatives to Cedar?

We used a poplar accent once and it was a real b*tch to sand when paired with the cedar. Especially flat sawn. Dont go there. White spruce is a very strong light wood and can be stained pretty much any colour you desire with good results. The issue is finding clear white spruce in any usable...

It's been a while. Any updates to your ditch bag?

Like Odyssey I only really paddle flat water. I portage around pretty much everything if solo and out in the back country. But WHAT IF you say. valid question. I dont often take anything other than water and maybe a snack, first aid kit. If I do it goes in my old rucksack which gets carabinered...

    Source for Jack's Special Plans?

I have paddled both Mems and Karins and I like them a lot...not tippy feeling at all and they are quite fast...excellent glide.I traded with karin one day and left her waaaaaay behind. Not a hard boat to build and could be made fairly light with a bit of care. I am thinking of one for myself.
